Interesting that you ask. I help people own these for a living...so it's my job to feel for them. I make sure all of my customers understand exactly what they are getting into. Some of the posts I see on here with bad information make me sick. I also understand and appreciate these sophisticated engines. I hate to see someone spend $4,500 on an engine upgrade if they don't plan to burn 93 octane. It is potentially damaging to the engine to run lower octane fuel. I just want people to get what they pay for and be happy with their boats for the long term.

jrz1 Congratulations on the G25 order! 550 engine is tremendous. You will love your new boat whatever colors and bimini you choose.

Thanks G20. I'm looking forward to a great summer with the family in it. Have a great boat now in my 2011 Malibu 247LSV with the LSA but for a variety of reasons, I decided to make this switch. I'm pretty excited about it (new things are always exciting).

Pretty sure that my dealer told me that the 91 (mid) that they sell on the lake was what they ran in them with no issue. I'll double check. Running 93 isn't a deal breaker - but don't want to piss money away if I don't have to either.

91 is considered premium in some areas isn't it? 87, 89, 91 (though it does seem more common to see 93 these days). The owners manual says you can run 87 in a pinch but the electronics will dial back the power to prevent detonation/pinging. Even with the electronics, there's probably some risk of detonation regardless though I doubt there's much risk of it with 91 in a normally aspirated motor. Has anyone pinged the engine manufacturer?

            Here's PCM's official recommendation.

For optimal performance and reliability, the 450 requires the use of premium 93-octane fuel.

The 550 requires 93-octane fuel with no exceptions.

See attached clip from the manual.

Thanks for sharing. I - of course - was unaware that is your work. I can indeed now understand, and appreciate where you are coming from. I would conclude you must be great at what you do. Thanks again.

Hey G20five, i was just curious if you have an opinion on this. we only have 91 premium in this area. I have not seen 93 anywhere near me. would i need to use an octane booster like Torco (others have mentioned this product on this forum) to try to get to 93?

sorry jrz1 to hijack your thread. oh, and i'm jealous. i saw a G25 at the boatshow this weekend. i'd be excited if I were you for summer too!

Colors are due and my kids and I found this picture on the net and they reached immediate consensus that this was what our new G25 would look like. And so it was.....

It's VERY hard to find 93 here in Gadsden, AL. Most of the time it is 87 89 91 and I think the shell might sell 93 at few locations but not many close by. Also we arent allowed to have gas pumps on our river anymore except there is one that got grandfathered in and it ONLY sells 87 octane and since it's the only one it's like 4.50 a gallon.

It's about the same length as my current 247 but the bow area is bigger which is nice and the sides are much taller which helps with the storage. We were there this weekend as well trying to decide on colors. April seems like a long ways off!

You'll be getting her at the perfect time, gives you a couple weeks to break in that engine, and you'll be ready for "fresh" sets before all the craziness sets in @ LKN!
