Thanks for the input. He was 13lbs 6 oz a couple of weeks ago, so I can get this jacket now: http://us.binnacle.com/product_info....oducts_id=5137

I hope that it lasts through the boating season this year. It says max weight of 25 lbs.

I'm thinking if you have a G something, there is adequate room, facilities, and appurtenances for birthing.

we had ours out last fall. he was 6 months old, and loved it. we bought him an o'neil neoprene jacket from Sam's Club of all places that was good to 30lbs. we're doing the parent-tot swim lessons this winter and hopefully he'll be ready for this in the spring. he'll be 1 year in March.

          I doubt they float upright.

I will contact O'Brien for a Fun Board group buy. The economy has got to be good enough to bring that thing back.

They don't.. nor do the vests with the big float in the back of the head - the kid has to have enough body control to stay upright.

The common misconception is that the vest will keep the head above water and upright - they won't.. they just make it easy to grab the child. If you take a kid who's too young to really control their movements and drop them in the water in a baby vest - they'll typically end up face-down, but with the big float/handle sticking up for easy grabbing.

We had our kid out on the lake when he was 6 days old- I doubt he'll remember it though! I am not a fan of car seats on boats but do whatever makes you most comfortable. I have seen a baby strapped into car seat in the water. She was floating, but upside down. The cat seat was pretty heavy saturated with water and filled with a baby- it would have been hard to lift from a boat rail. There are risks having babies on board but my position is it is better to have a 5 year old who is comfortable around the water than a 10 year old around it for the first time.

                  Congrats on the baby!
