We can usually ride into late November before it gets too crazy but a few Decembers ago I think the water was 38 and the air was 40 and there was snow on the ground but no ice yet. Cold hands are the worst but dish washing gloves definitely help if you don't have a good pair of neoprene ones:

As if the cold water wasn't enough to give me a headache:

I went out early last November and the water temp was 38. The air temp was a balmy 55, and it ended up being a great day. Water temp is no problem but you need the right gear. Also, it's no place for a beginner because spending too much time in the water won't please anybody. I removed the course the following week and it was a sheet of ice in another two. -Marc

"If your lake isn't frozen, you better be riding! Staring out at the frozen tundra for 4 months in MN is brutal."

Honestly once I took up snowboarding I quite feeling that way. I don't even look at the lake all winter, and no grass to mow.

In college, my brother and I drove up from school in Ann Arbor, Mi the day my dad was getting his SN winterized and went for a few last runs in a shorty. It was October 15, 2006 in Michigan and there was some snow on the ground and flakes falling in the air, water was still in the 40s though.

The coldest i've rode in was when my buddy sold his boat in spring, snow on the hills a few hundred meters above the lake the water and air was 9 degrees (48f) was overcast and cloudy was awful!

IMO...with the proper gear (ie. dry suit/wet suit, gloves, hat, etc.), you can ride in anything....think its just a matter of is it worth it to you or not. At this stage in my life being chained to a desk ~80-120 hours a week (by choice obviously...we choose the paths we take....generally), I'll go riding anytime/anywhere with anyone - I flat out do not care how cold, how rough the water is, etc. I'm the happiest when I'm at the end of a rope behind a Nautique.

Played in the intercoastal in Myrtle Beach all last winter. Lowest water temp was 46 and the air temp was usually in the 50-70 range. O'Neil 3/4 wetsuit. Was pretty comfortable except for the previously mentioned ice cream head and the frozen feet. A wise old man told me if the air + water temp=100 you're good to go! And we didn't worry about the alligators the entire winter!
