    1998 Super Sport value?

    Hi all,

I am completely new to Nautiques, but am contemplating purchasing a used one. Can anyone tell me what they think would be a decent price for this 1998 Super Sport I'm looking at? It's a one-owner boat used in fresh water only. The engine is a fuel injected GT-40 motor with 810 hrs. The trailer I believe is a 2007 and can be included or not included in the deal. I would need the trailer so I have to factor that into the purchase price as well.

Thanks in advance for any help in determining value!

Good question. Don't see too many NSS anymore w/o tower ballast etc... Looks like a nice boat though. My original thought is $15-18K.

$15-18K is about what I was thinking as well. I am basing that on searching for similar boats about this same time last year. It looks to be well taken care of with a good interior. The platform needs a little loving but that should clean up nicely.

If you want to put a tower on it then you should factor in another $2K+ for a New Dimensions Tower if you want the factory look. Board racks and speakers will bump that price up some more. Adding ballast will set you back about $1500 for bags and pumps, etc if you want to plumb everything in but you can get bags and manually fill them for quite a bit less.

The GT40 is a great motor and 800 hours is nothing. Good luck on your boat hunt and welcome to the site.

Thanks so much for the info already guys!

So you think $16,500 for the boat and the trailer would be a good deal?

You say the GT-40 engine is a great motor and 800 hours is nothing...how many hours can I expect on that motor?

Ya that seems like a pretty good deal to me but you can probably work him down a little further.

If the motor was taken care of well it should hit 1600 easily and probably quite a bit more. I think the recommended rebuild is about 2,000 hours but I am not sure on that. I know there are a couple owners on here with well over 2,000 hours on their GT40s and still going strong without a rebuild.

1500-2000 hours before a rebuild would be easy. At 50-100 a year, that's a lot of years. I bought my 99 Ski Nautique last year for 11.5K. I know the SS's are in high demand but I would think 16.5K is the high end (with trailer). The boat looks to be in real nice condition, but without a tower and ballast system you will be paying a few thousand to make it rideable/surfable. Also, I noticed it doesn't have Perfect Pass. I think that is a great system to have on any boat, and that will run you about $1200 if you buy the latest setup. JMHO. -Marc

If you buy it ditch the pylon in the center of the boat assuming you are going to put a New Dimensions Tower on it. The pylon comes out really easy and Perko makes a stainless steal drain plate that fits perfectly over the hole and it looks like thats the way it came from the factory.

So you're thinking less than $16,500 should buy that boat and trailer, and the engine probably has at least another 7-10 years on it minimum before rebuild with the proper maintenance?

I paid for mine 14.5K back in 2009, but it had dual axle trailer. It was spotless with 400hrs. I think I was lucky

Do you have a link to that Perko drain plate? I am curious what that looks like. I put some carpet over a pvc cap level with the floor and bolted a pvc pipe where the pylon was for support. The drain plate sounds like it might be a better idea.

For reference, I paid $18.5K for a 1998 SS with 217 hours on a single axel trailer two years ago. It might have been a bit high but it was in great shape, fit my budget and was available close to home and when I was ready to buy. I put a black new dimensions tower for about $2K, auto ballast, 4 bags, 3 pumps for maybe a little over another $2K. And just ordered perfect pass in the group buy for less than $1K. So I have about $23.5K into it at this point and it has a little less than 300 hours.

I have seen some SANs for $25K or $26K that could be a better option but so far I am quite happy with my boat.

                      I can't remember if it's the 2.5in plate...

                      or the 3.25in plate...

but it looks great and looks like it was meant to be there.

Keep in mind that the vinyl looks like new, and I suspect it may be new from nautiqueskins.com. I had the 99 air version of that boat in those colors and redid the vinyl with skins from nautiqueskins and it looked identical (other than the obvious differences for seat layout). That's over 2k in skins alone not counting the labor. I think that price is pretty good. You won't find many boats of that vintage with interiors in that kind of shape and to get them there and look g factory new costs over 2k in materials and either a ton of your time installing the skins or paying at least another 1k for installation.

Chexi's right. One give a way that the skins have been replaced is the nose piece in the bow. I've heard numerous stories about how hard those are to get perfect, and you can see in the pics the color lines don't line up factory perfect. You can also see a few wrinkles in the seat bottoms and port combing pad. Overall, they did a nice job replacing the skins. That's not an easy task to accomplish.

I'll put it this way, if there was a tower and built in ballast with a half decent stereo on that boat... that interior, paint, and hours. I think 20k would be a good deal. Assuming you will be putting that into it, and allowing 3.5-4k for that work is pretty fair.

Overall, 16.5 is a pretty good deal. One of those situations where I'd like to get it for 15-15.5 but if there's competition I wouldn't want to let it slip through the fingers.
