has anyone found a way to not pay road tax on boat fuel?

I know its not a huge price to incur in the grand scheme on things, but the national average for the tax that is added is about $0.50 per gal. It is pretty easy to get around if you use diesel because there are lots of uses for it that aren't intended for highway use (construction equipment home heating oil), but I havent seen anyone that offers off road gas. its probably under $500 for most people - but thats an extra $500 that could go toward more boating equipment.

In Virginia, you can get the form from the DMV. You just submit your boat gas receipts at the end of the year and they send you a check.

Wisconsin doesn't allow it.

Gasoline sold on or after July 1, 1998, for off-road use in mobile machinery and equipment, provided the fuel is delivered into the customer's bulk storage tank in an amount not less than 100 gallons. Caution: Gasoline cannot be sold tax-exempt if it will be placed into the fuel supply tank of a licensed motor vehicle (except an urban mass transportation vehicle), snowmobile, recreational motorboat, or an all-terrain vehicle (unless the ATV is registered for private use).

Just search it. There are several boating sites with laws and fuel refund info.

Let us know if you find anything on Federal refunds. State is only about half the tax.

NH is the same as Virginia. Save your receipts and write your boat reg on them. Fill out the paper work and send in the receipts. Pretty much an honor system, Live Free or Die!

I get about $125-$175 back a year. I think it's around $.18/gallon in NH.

I have been applying for the refund in Texas for the last 8 or so years. Save your receipts. They will ask for them every couple of years. But I have always gotten the refund.

i think i did it several years back in NC and only got back around $50, which did not feel worth the trouble at the time. i don't recall how much they give you back on the gallon though

I think I spend about 5 minutes on it. It has never felt like much trouble to add up the number of gallons used, and mail it. Might be more complicated where you are though.
