has anyone found a way to not pay road tax on boat fuel?
$0.20 / gallon in TX off the top of my head. I have 2 years of receipts I need to send into the state. I have AT LEAST 2 free tanks of fuel sitting in that envelope...
No dice on 2 years receipts. In Texas you are limited to claiming the 19.6 cents tax refund to 12 months after purchase date. You'll probably need to send in copies of the receipts the first year and then the state usually asks for copies every 3rd year.

NC does it for sure and I have done it the last 5 or 6 years. I have a big tank that I have filled so I'm not paying marina prices the most I have gotten back in a year was around $80. For NC its call the "road use tax" and it can be filled out electronically. Its an online account you can set up through the state to do it each year. Its set up more for farm machinery, etc but it still works for us boaters. I don't know if "marina gas" has the tax included or not? I'd assume it does?
The reason this is state-by-state is because you can only get back the taxes that the state adds to each gallon of gasoline (or diesel). You cannot get back the taxes that the Federal government adds to the fuel.
FYI, I know there's not many in IA on here but I emailed the state and the only boaters capable of refund here are commercial fisherman. EVEN if we're a show team that is tax exempt 501C3 status. Good try though. Thanks guys!
NC certainly taxes the heck out of our gas. it looks like they will refund you .3820 on the gallon, which i suppose would be worth it. maybe i'll try it again, i just hate piling up paper receipts all year. i didn't see anywhere to e-file it though on the dept. of revenue site under their listed "electronic services", as someone mentioned above ?

My understanding is that the refund is .3820 minus sales tax, which is .2006. So the net refund would be only .18
Not complaining, just want to understand if I understand the calc correctly. Anyone?

yeah, that's probably right ... and likely the reason i found it to not be worth the trouble when i did it the first time

If you go on www.dornc.com go under electronic services but go under Businesses and select Motor Fuels Refund e-file. Again you have to set up an account and I don't remember how I did that but I've been using this for years. I just claimed the refund yesterday and it took about 10 minutes and I got $38 on about 200 gallons of fuel for last year. I have tank near the dock that gets filled so I don't claim it on each boat fill up I do, I do it on the gallons they fill up my tank each year. (so there is still some in the tank in other words)
And yes to obd666, you do have to pay the sales tax so that gets added back in. So for 10 minutes worth of time online its worth the $35-$75 I get each year. If it were more of a hassle I probably wouldn't do it.
