Getting in shape for the season

I think I'm getting older each year. Still figuring it out. What are folks doing to get into shape for the up coming season. We just had an elliptical delivered this week to the house. Also thinking about some used free weights from CL. Other thoughts.

In prep for our winter trip to Garnd Targhee, WY I did this. http://www.baldface.net/skiingboardi...y-conditioning

Now am doing in weight training at 24 hr fitness. Used to swim about a mile 2 or 3 times a week but been slacking -- but gotta do that now in prep for Hawai'i in 3 weeks so I can paddle hard to catch waves.

http://www.crossfit.com ... There will be polarizing opinions on this. Some, like me, will swear by it ... others will hate it. Check out the site, read the intro papers they have. (EX= http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf...al_04_2012.pdf )

If you are serious about your all around TRUE fitness, and being able to perform functional movements i.e. strengthening your quads, core, forearms, shoulders ... for long days on the water, then I would suggest giving it a serious look.

Been wanting to do CrossFit for over a year now but have a knee issue that I've gone to two separate orthopedic surgeons and neither want to fix via surgery...

Interesting . . . I work out with two Orthopedic Surgeons, and my profession is centered around Orthopods . . . what do they say is wrong if you don't mind me asking? I like to know what differing opinions think is operative vs. non-operative.

Back on topic . . . If you have a local CrossFit affiliate (Box) go see them, everyone I have ever encountered in the CF world has been nothing but welcoming and warm toward new people wanting to figure out what is going on. You can sit down with the people running the place and let them know about the issue, they will scale the workouts to the injury and possibly get you through it. This is a stupid and anecdotal opinion (Read: talk to your orthopod before starting any new w/o regimen), but if the surgeons aren't willing to operate, I would guess it is something they want you to rehab and push through? Scaled CF might be a good way to work on that. I have pushed through a few decent injuries since CF with the direction of My orthopods that in the past would have had me sidelined.

Small piece of broken cartilage on the underside of knee cap. Not willing to operate until knee locks up. My guess is since knee surgery is so invasive and will never be the same they don't want to go in and clean it up unless its absolutely necessary. Have been working with a close friend on rehabbing it (he's a doctor of physical therapy) and he thinks he can fix it. I'm just tired of not being able to do any cardio (not even elliptical - that was part of what originally messed it up) and not being able to push harder on leg workouts.

Yea, thats a bummer . . . surprised they don't go with a simple scope (minimally invasive in nature), see if they can get it. Oh well, I guess that is why it doesn't say M.D. after my name. Good luck though, I hope they get it cleared up for the season!

www.crossfit.com - great stuff. you can scale it as appropriate. if you're not familiar with the movements, there is a lot of guidance on the site. the other option is visit your local CF gym for a few rounds. if you like it, you can make a home gym for a pretty reasonable price.

http://outlawcoach.wordpress.com/ - this is crossfit on steroids.

Climb stairs, running/jogging.... Buy a good quality weight vest to wear while doing some exercises or stairs. Crossfit is good, just don't overdo it at first. I have several friends that went from doing almost nothing to jumping right into crossfit and have anywhere from knee injuries to broken hands or toes.... I have a mini Crossfit I can set up in my driveway. I got an old front end loader tire, some old fire hose, and a sledge hammer that I beat the tire with after flipping it. I also use the tire to do box jumps with after flipping it as well....... Oh, and I'm 45....

Crad - you were supposed to start this process at the winter solstice....several days before Christmas.

It never ceases to amaze me how much I think I am prepared for the watersports, snowmobile, snowboard season and after the first go I feel like I am starting all over. Maybe its just me, but the intrinsic muscles involved are hard to simulate the movement in the gym...I always think if I tweak a movement with a band or free weight to target a muscle group I wont be as sore but ultimately it is impossible to mimic the constant variables of balance, strength and duration.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw03IKNa9MI - That is good sim, however stationary flat bench and resistance on catch and pull.
Did a week in Sri Lanka before kids were born in 08. HUGE surf. I was in arguably the best shape of my life, that turned out to be one the most humbling experiences in my life. 8 foot right handers. Lankan dudes could swim circles around everyone, really quite impressive level of conditioning considering everyone was experienced or at least appeared to be awesome shape. These guys were going out 1/4 mile into the Indian ocean behind where vacationers were hanging. Unreal.
I am happy to begin the season with a base and work into summer shape.
