Plasti-dipped vents (pictures and some advice)

    Hey guys,

First off ... This stuff is awesome. If you are going for a matte black or white there isn't anything much easier than going to Home Depot and grabbing some painters tape and a couple cans of this stuff. Ok on with the write up:

First I started by masking off the vents and prepping the surface with a nice clean:

Then I got to painting. After the first coat I can give this piece of advice, be fairly sparing with it, it will run or sag, I was able to clean that up with my second coat, but it would have been smart to relax a bit on the first

This is after the first coat dried, I really liked the overall color and look, but like I said there were some sags and runs that needed cleaning up:

So on with the second. Here is where it got messed up beyond repair. I left the can in the gym where it was pretty cold. Unfortunately, the product tends to clump when cold. It left the second coat looking pitted when dried. I think the fix is to keep the can in warm water and shake very very often:

I applied one last coat to see if I could cover up the texture that had set it, unfortunately it didn't. But looking in the bright side, this allowed me the opportunity to peel it off and start again which shows the forum how easily reversible this is.

Here is a distance shot to give you an idea of what it will look like when my perfectionist mind will let it be:

Since I knew it was all coming off I didn't bother with a razor around the edges, hence the tattered edges, but you get the idea.

    comments/critiques are welcome!!!

Here is half way through the peel off process:

All in all it is a great low cost alternative and best of all, if you hate it, peel it off!!

I have seen this product used in various applications. Question, if it peels off easily, any idea on durability once you get it the way you like it? seems if it peels off easily, it would also scratch. or peel off with a little wear and tear??

BTW the black will look nice against the white "background"

About durability ... They use it to spray entire cars and it holds up to power washers/car washes. I wouldn't put it in any high stress areas, but cosmetic places should be fine. I will get a picture of the can ASAP.

I don't think the "clumping" is the result of the cold. It is more likely the result of putting it on too thick. I did the wheels on my truck with this stuff and it has lasted 5 months now without one problem - even through car washes and tire rotations. I'm going to do the wheels on my boat trailer to match - but my boat is on the lift and my trailer sits in storage by itself most of the time, so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

It's pretty easy to peel off right after you've applied it if you change your mind. It is not as easy to peel off after it has dried in the sun for weeks. Nonetheless, you can still peel it off after extended periods of time, it just doesn't come off as easily as you would think.

Would this work as a transom saver? Like tape off an area just above the swim platform to keep boards from banging into your gel coat?

It's very difficult to make a clean edge with it.

I think Clibka would have better luck if he took the vent cover off and then plasti-dipped it.

I looked at removing the vent. Would love to do it that way, don't see how to get to the upper bolts? Anyone have some advice on how to get them off?

You can do some cool stuff with plati-dipping too. I've seen some guys do it with carbon fiber-like stuff and chrome and all kinds of crazy things like that and they almost always turn out great.

Sorry if this topic is boring some people, but I'm super pleased with how it turned out. Here's the final product.

It is definitely advised to take the vents off, be patient with the stuff and use a razor when taking the tape off. I've got two places that stuck and made a small mess. Other than that ... It isn't professional, but it cost $20.

wheels on my sons car. He painted while on the car - wrapped plastic garbage bag around rotor and taped lugs... he completed all four in a couple hours
