    Platform Transformation and Seadek

Yesterday I took my boat out for the first time this year and it was great. We had already ordered a seadek template kit because we knew we were going to replace the carpet on the platform with seadek. When we got in we removed the platform and decided to pull of the carpet expecting to see a new, black or blue platform. What we found was a cracked, lime green platform that wasn't even close to new condition (I will post pics when I get home). We have no idea how it got like this being as we bought this boat used; and we were shocked that we went all summer without even knowing because it had carpet over it. We decided to go ahead and trace out the platform and send it in to seadek for an estimate anyways. Our plan is to take Bondo, for fiberglass, and fill all of the cracks and actually put a thin layer over the entire platform, sand it down to smooth, and paint it a glossy automotive black, then add the teak wood seadek with the Nautique lettering etched into the middle of it. I will post before and after pics as well as pics throughout the process and see how well all of this turns out. Lemme know what you guys think.

I apologize if they show up sideways...using an apple ipod together with a PC computer gets confusing

I've never seen carpet on a platform. It looks like the previous owner may have been trying to hide the damage. I think your plan will work as the cracks look superficial.

I have never heard of putting carpet on a platform either. Does the bottom of the platform look the same way? The shape looks right but it looks like the top is missing the indents were the Sano or Sea Deck would go. I am wondering if maybe this is a homemade platform?

So there are supposed to be indents??? Underneath the cracks there is white fiberglass and I thought about pulling it all off and using that but then I saw a little hill/slope at the edge and it made me think that that wasn't right. It could be a brand new platform underneath the cracks.

The only problem would be that even if it is a brand new platform (underneath the other stuff)...we have already ordered the seadek as a SINGLE peice and not split up like the original SANO. If I could cancel the order I might do that. Do you know if I have the option of backing out of the order? If they let me I MAY just go through zach@N3 and just get the pre-cut seadek like the old SANO.

I have begun the process of pulling off the filler material that was used previously. Much to my disappointment though, there are cracks in the actual platform (I love this boat but this platform is a piece of work). What I have decided to do is glue the cracked pieces back down and then add Bondo or caulk to fill the cracks, paint it a glossy black, and then add a pre-cut teak wood seadek pad.

BTW, for those of you that are going to add pics from an Ipod/Iphone, take the pictures horizontally and they will show up vertically on the computer.

I would check with some marinas to see if they may have a used one available to sell. You may never be happy with it.

Even though I would LOVE to get a new platform it would run me 1-2G soooo even if I don't get it to perfect condition, I can get it good enough that no one will notice it and it will serve its purpose. I think you guys will be surprised what just 50 bucks worth of Bondo and paint will do for this platform. Seadek will also help the looks alot.

Like I said, I couldn't be happier with this boat. Everything in it is great and I don't know why this platform is such a piece of crap. Just doesn't make sense.

Maybe the previous owner backed into something.

Possibly, I would bet that he just dropped it one day. That thing isn't light and with my garage I have to take it off everytime we put it in.

could you not just sand it down and put down some kitty hair and resin?

That's what the last guy did and it cracked. The cracks in the extra layer followed exactly with the cracks in the real platform; so I don't want to make the same mistake he did.

my 07 had some gel coat cracks in it under the sano when i replaced it, but i repaired those with a repair kit and put down the new sano. It turned out great.

How deep are the cracks in the platform? Do you think it could be reinforced on the underside and then repaired on top?
