Need Input on Potential 2002 SANTE Purchase

Looking to get input on the following situation:

Found a well-priced 2002 SANTE. Based on my admittedly high standards, I would say the boat is in overall average condition. Interior is clean, but with some expected wear in the vinyl due to age/use (a few cracks in the rear seats and rear corners of the v-drive lockers). Exterior has a few blemishes (scrapes in the Air decals along the sides and one small puncture in the gel coat near the nose. A new factory PCM motor was put in in 2011 by the local Nautique dealer after the owner left the boat in the lift on the lake without winterizing and an early freeze here in TX cracked the block. There is a little over 60 hours on the new motor and a little over 500 total hours on the boat.

Went for a test drive, the boat started and ran great for about 10 min when I noticed that the temp gauge was continuing to rise past normal. We idled it back to the boat ramp and the owner took it to the local Nautique dealer for repair. The Nautique dealer said the impeller had gone bad and replaced the impeller along with performing some standard maintenance (oil change, new battery). Owner provided the receipt showing the work done by the Nautique dealer, which ran a little over $600 in total.

Went back for a second test drive today and the boat would not start. However, it was not making any of the "normal" engine not starting sounds (e.g., the clicking of a low battery or spinning of a bad starter). Instead, there was a pretty harsh metal-on-metal sound coming from the engine. It definitely did not sound good. Any thoughts on what could be wrong? Another new motor? Regardless, the owner is taking the boat back to the Nautique dealer for repair, which leads to my dilemma.

Assuming the owner is willing to pay for any repairs that are necessary (he indicated that he is), would you still be willing to buy this boat or would you simply walk away and try to find another boat?

Walk away. It may just be bad timing as things go wrong, but for peace of mind for you in the future it's just easier to walk away. Or you can have the boat surveyed by a marine surveyor. He will go over it with a fine tooth comb and give you an honest opinion.

If you can verify the hours on the new engine, it's probably all of the original gear/accessories on the replacement engine, therefore probably the bad starter you heard on the 2nd go around.

Which engine, the Ford or Chevy? If it's the Ford, and engine replacement and hours can be verified, you maybe onto a great deal. If you're not really mechanical, you pay a dealer to do an inspection.

I'm mechanical and don't mind digging into sorting out projects, IF the deal warrants the time investment...YMMV

If it is a boat in just average condition, it will be easy to walk away from. i suggest you do that.

I assume you are referring to Buxton when you talk about the local Nautique dealer. If so, he sees so many pre-owned boats that are in great condition I would pass on this one and wait a week or two until he gets several more top notch pre-owned boats in.

Two options, ride this out with the current owner.... Have very very detailed inspection done and do not settle for anything that may be just waiting to fail on you.

Other option is to walk. Not sure your price range but there are other 00-03 SANTE's that will hit the market here in the next month. As far as price ranges go, you may want to be a little more flexible. Find the right boat and don't let it slip away. That grand or two up front for a well taken care of clean running boat will pay off in spades over something that will be in and out of the shop.

If you are questioning the "health" of the boat, trust your gut instinct. It is usually correct. There will be an increase in boats being sold as more people receive their orders from the factory in the next month or two (I will have a 2002 SAN available in about a month). It doesn't sound like the owner is pulling a fast one on you, but if he forgot to winterize his boat and left it on a lift, imagine what else may have occurred during the ownership.

Leaving boats unwinterized and on lifts over the water is pretty common down here. We did it for years. You just need to be diligent about watching the weather and, if need be, dropping the boat in the water over night when it dips too far below freezing. Just putting that out there, it's not a practice that I believe shows poor care..... but, followed up with a impeller blow up right after does raise the eyebrows a bit.

To many nice boats out there to deal with that unless like someone else said YOU ARE STEALING IT, and almost as important, you have the time and patients to work out all the issues.

The price we had agreed upon (under the assumption that everything was ready to go after the impeller repair) is the only reason I'm still interested in the boat at all. If it was closer to the other prices I am seeing for '01-'03 SANTEs and SANs, then I would have already run away as fast as I could toward another boat! Accordingly, I'm curious to hear at what price would you guys would consider it to be "STEAL"?

Here is a quick run down of the specs:
                          '02 SANTE
PCM 330 Motor (replaced in 2011, a little over 60 hours on it according to Nautique Dealer)
530+ total hours on boat (amazingly, still has the original Teleflex digital gauges that are working)
                          Perfect Pass
Triple Factory Ballasts (all pumps work, but a couple of the fill gauges do not)
Flight Control Tower with Flight Clips
Sound System (Older Clarion head unit w/ iPod hookup, 6 in-boat speakers, 4 tower speakers, 12" sub in custom enclosure)
Interior - Overall clean, but vinyl has a few blemishes (cracking in a couple of the rear seats and the corners of v-drive locker covers)
Exterior - Overall clean, but has a few blemishes (small puncture (size of a pencil eraser or so) in gel coat by the nose and rubbing off of some of the decals)
Comes with an '02 Tandem-axle Shoreland'r Trailer (good shape, but tires are showing signs of aging with tiny cracks starting to appear in sidewalls)
