Q: list of insurance companies to shop

We've been through several discussions on insurance....but I'm shopping to replace Progressive. Here are the companies I'm considering.

The two main considerations for me are 1: high liability limits and 2: wind or named storm coverage.
Maybe the latter is governed by the State...TBD.

Here are the ones I'm considering. Any comments to add or avoid would be helpful.

    Alphabetical order:

    Boat U.S.
    Geico
    Ski Safe
    Travelers
Maybe State Farm but only because I know an agent that owns a Nautique.

one thing I have notice over the years is HP ,that's the question they all ask (and they should) its hard for the insurance companies to understand that increase in HP does not mean high speed in tow boats. Try convincing them that your 550HP boat only does tops 38-41. Also only if ask, dont talk about it takes on 3000 pounds on water, it only just freaks out the agent even more.

I had good luck with Global Marine. They even refunded the unused portion of the policy when I sold my boat.
I am cautious of Ski-safe. After nearly 20 years of claim free service with modest increases - they all of sudden wanted to double my annual rate, and when I called to talk about it, their stance was "thats just the way it is"......

I looked at them all and stayed with my carrier for all my other insured items, State Farm. I have had some friends in the marine business that have first hand experience with Progressive, Geico, and others resulting in really slow claim management and paying claims made. I did pay more due to some added coverage for stereo, speakers, amps as many don't consider this if you are upgrading from stock.

One problem I found when shopping for insurance is make sure they understand you may not always be driving the boat. I bought a ski boat because I like to ski.

Some insurance companies may want personal information, and driving records of anyone who drives your boat.

That's a good point. IIRC, Progressive told me that if any one individual that didn't live with me drove the boat on more than 12 separate days a year,....they needed to be listed as a driver.

I think I'm going to start a list of questions:

                      1. Drivers
                      2. Named stormed coverage
                      3. Wind storm coverage
                      4. Coverage in my boat barn
                      5. Coverage while traveling
                      6. Disappearing deductible (I had w/Progressive)
                      7. Deductible/Limits
                      8. Value

Note I have low horsepower and stock stereo.

I have mine covered by progressive/USAA. USAA has program set up through progressive since they do not cover boats. My rates are $900/12 months. Have had good success with them on claims in the past.

That's the coverage I'm getting rid of....Progressive through USAA.

We have Allstate home, auto and also other watersports toys.
Added the G this year. $625/ yr. 1000 ded. The nice thing is that the "shore damage" deductible is only $250 (running aground, hull damage, etc.)

United Marine Underwriters way cheaper then USAA/progressive. I love USAA for my auto personal property was surprised by how expensive for boats.

I have never has to make a claim so I don't know anything about customer service.
