    Boating Insurance

I called MetLife today to insure my new to me 94 Ski Nautique CB and they said that this type of boat is on a "no quote" list and they cant insure it. This makes me mad seeing how i have my car insurance through them and just wanted to have it all in one place for ease. What's everyone else doing for insurance? I have no idea since im just out of school and have never really dealt with it.

    RE: Boating Insurance

I have always had my boats with Ski Safe Insurance. They are very familiar with ski boats and there pricing is in line. My '01 196 is insured with them for around $300 per year for year round use.

        RE: Boating Insurance

I could never recommend skisafe to anyone - terrible customer service, they are a broker, not an insurance company. My boat was in a fire, in which 10 boats/4 trucks/rv/cars were destroyed / damaged. Lots of insurance companies involved (I had 4 of my own alone to deal with). Skisafe was by far the absolute worst of the bunch. I too had always heard good things about them, and it seems if most little claims are handled quickly. But not in my case. True, my own fault as I hadn't read all of the policy when I signed up with them. But after reading the policy, boat not afloat or in transit - equipment not covered, hydrofoils (and liabilty involving) not covered. Seperate deductable for trailer and boat (both of my were lost), "You must deal with the actual insurance company, not us" was a favorite quote, as was "It's off season, why are you worried, Nautiuqe really doesn't have a 10 week lead time" it goes on and on. And all because I wanted to save $150.00 a year. Next boat I will have insured will be through a local agent. My truck and personal property claims were handled so smooth. Sure it may be more - but for the piece of mind - I'll spend a little more.

Make sure your liability is way up there as well. The rider who is injured behind your boat may be a buddy and never sue when he gets hurt, but would his family? All-State, Country Companies, Progressive, State Farm - all were there for everyone. You have no idea how many hours were spent sitting on hold or waiting for a call back from SkiSafe. My buddy had an 05 X2 in the fire - totalled - same issues with SkiSafe.

sorry to rant, please read your policies!

I use a company called twin rivers here in CA and all they do is insure boat. I was with ski safe and I have to agree I was not happy with their service when I went to cancel my policy on a boat I sold, they gave me a big hassel. With twin rivers I just called up and they took care of everything. Very professional in my mine.

I have a rider on my homeowners through Rural Insurance. It is costing me 285.00 a year. This is on a 96 SS. I have it valued at 21000 and 1500 for the trailer. I think it is 500 deductable.

I wonder if MetLife had to pay out a large claim against a policy on a SN and now they won't cover them. Maybe someone 'teak surfing' or something...

Kind of like the way the insurance companies, back around the end of the 80's, either dropped the policies on the Suzuki Samurai owners or made them pay a HUGE premium.

I found that Metlife would not quote our boat either (99 ProAir) and then quoted a policy from Progressive Insurance. I think their quote came back at around $900/yr! We also have all of our other insurance with Met, house cars, etc...

We ended using the BoatUS insurance. Quoted a fair price (~$300/yr) and covered both the boat and trailer, although I had to work them over to get the value on the boat that we would need to replace it in case of a total loss.

                        Fwiw...

State Farm used to cover ours but I got much better rates and service with Motorist Mutual. They realized that I did not live in the 'hood even though we have a city mailing address. Motorist was more expensive by about $40 ($300 to $340) but I saved far more than that by moving everything else to them and I would hate to deal with two insurance companies if the boat and trailer get damaged in a car accident while towing.
