neutral safety switch... normally open or normally closed?

Can someone confirm to me how the neutral safety switch works? I want to use it as an automation trigger.

Pretty sure it's normally closed. When it opens, it shuts off.

awesome, thanks. How are the wires themselves connected to the switch? Will I need to cut a wire to pull a signal or is there a stud that i can put a second ring terminal on?

Out of curiosity what are you trying to automate? Something to do with stereo volume so it cuts way down when in neutral?

OK so I own an MB not a Nautique. But it's PCM powered and there's a lot more PCM knowledge here than anywhere else.

I've installed a trim tab and I'd like to use the closed neutral switch as a trigger to redeploy the tab automatically. It would really be something like neutral switch + 15 seconds, so when I come off plane the tab deploys. I've already got the circuit set up (in my mind anyway!) for the tab to auto retract using an RPM window switch (for example auto retract at 3000 rpm).

Don't the two wires just connect to the switch with phillips head screws though? Wouldn't it make more sense to just put a wire on a ring terminal and put it on top of the existing wire and screw it back in?

I've never had one apart. I figured I was a micro switch with wires soldered on. If they are terminal connectors then yes but I don't think they are. Like I said, never had that area apart though.
