    Safety chain???

When I take my boat out of the water, once I'm off the ramp, I drive up a VERY steep hill. There is a tremendous amount of pressure on my trailer strap. Has anyone ever heard of a boat slipping off of a trailer? Does anyone else use a safety chain?

I use a turnbuckle. I crank the strap tight then hook the turnbuckle on and turn it snug. A back up is always a good idea. Not that only the strap can break but the lock on the winch.

Yes on the chain with very little slack. No on the turnbuckle and transom straps.

Me too, with turnbuckle instead of chain. An ounce if prevention...

What you can (barely see in the pick is the turnbuckle)

So point of turnbuckle vs chain is just to get rid of slack? Because chain would be plenty strong.

No, just a fail safe incase the strap breaks and easier than a chain I think because it can easily be adjusted. I never pull by boat way up against the nose guard so it is never exactly in the same spot on the trailer and the turnbuckle and be adjusted quickly and easily.

Will the turnbuckle that is on nautiqueparts.com work for 2005 226 and boat mate trailer?

To answer your original question, I've seen two boats pitch off the trailer in one summer working as a dock boy in college. Quite a bit of damage to the running gear, so it's worth it to leave it strapped.

Turnbuckle, chain, strap, etc....I don't think it really matters. Obviously, one can argue stronger is better...but you're talking a relatively small load even on a steep ramp. You can check your winch but I bet it's rated for at least 1000lbs and bigger capacity ones are pretty cheap. (A safety issue is the boat leaving the trailer in a crash, so I think it's worthwhile to add an extra tie down at the bow and two at the stern for that reason.)

We try to make things quick: we take the stern straps off and leave the bow strap on. The person in the boat leans over the bow and releases the bow strap when we get to the water...then we continue backing and the boat floats off.
