ehhh, on the overheat! Definitely change the oil, and you'll need to find a way to determine if the head gasket is ok...Tricky on a boat engine, but a good shop can figure out how to get it done...

Re: impeller, it's *possible* to get them in backwards, and if you've never done one that might happen, but it *should* flip the impeller the right way. Are you saying you didn't realize the key slid out of the shaft before you ran it? If so, it would have overheated very quickly...
