Power and Torque- 240hp PCM 351

Buying a '94 SNOB. I could pay more and get the 310 GT motor but this boat is in excellenet shape and has everything I am looking for. I'm a 250lb slalom skier and barefooter. Plan on getting back in skiing shape but will there be enough HP to handle me with say 3-4 people in the boat? I'm hearing that this model engine is pretty powerful. Seller says there will be no problem at all and he states that there is not even a need for a 4 blade prop...anyone have this motor? what do you think ??

    Thanks

Neither will have a problem with the skiing, don't know if either will have the speed to foot someone that size with a full boat. The carb'd motor is fairly easy to upgrade to about 325hp with a cam heads and an intake, GT40 is not easily warmed up because PCM locks down the tuning on the fuel injection.

I have '96 ski nautique with this engine and slapped an acme 1442 prop on it. I believe I would have no problem pulling a couple 250lb skiers up at the same time. Definetely enough power there.

You'll be fine. Year models being equal, I'd take the carb.

            1:1 or 1.23 tranny?

If 1.23, upgrade the prop and your holeshot will be just as good as any of the newer 196's with the Excalibur (330-343hp) or 6.0L (375-409hp).

Top end will be a different story though... depending on whether you got a fast or slow hull (theyre all a little different), top speed may only be 41-44mph. Add a few heavy bodies in the boat and you may struggle to maintain 40 with a footer- which might be a problem at your size.

Like was mentioned earlier though, there is a tried and true top end package that will put you in the 320hp range and cost you ~$1500. Even a slow hulled SN should be able to hold 44mph with a big footer behind it with that package installed.

That engine will have no problem pulling you. However, everything being equal, I'd go with the GT40. There some experienced gearheads who can make carbs perform great, but for guys like me, I like to snap the key and go...no extra throttle, warming up, etc. Carbs take TLC, and EFI (for the most part) does not. Plus, the 310GT40 is one of the best powerplants of all time, with torque to spare Just my $.2
