The glass has to be *damaged* for there to be any concern at all. Gel is purely cosmetic. If the glass isnt damaged, even if visible, just run it.

You can fix it properly now if you want, but running it as is will not cause a problem. Putting a temporary repair on it for no reason will just make the doing the proper fix later more of a PITA.
nailed it on the head with all points

Well ... I knew this day would come sooner than later. I keep telling myself, "it's just a thing, it is not a big deal" but I'm sick to my stomach about the damage. What can you guys tell? Does it need to go to the shop or can I fix on my own?

a little bit hard to tell how big the damage is, about the size of a quarter? i wouldn't hesitate to tackle that. get an ounce of this and fix this and any other imperfections. i couldn't believe how easy it was. i had been putting off little nicks for ever.

Size of a dime. Unfortunately they can't have it to me until the 22nd and I have a big boat weekend coming up. It stays on a lift when not in use ... You guys think it will be ok? Can I put a temp fix on that won't make the final repair difficult like people have said?

Its either serious damage (if the glass is cracked or broken) or its purely cosmetic (if the damage does not extend past the gel).

If its the former, repair it properly before using the boat. If its the latter, then feel free to fix it later and use the boat in the meantime without worrying.

Neither scenario would benefit from a half @ssed temporary fix.
