Hi, apologies I do not own a nautique. My neighbor's brother does. It is a 19976 or maybe 77 (I will find outexactly)
I am not sure where to start, as I am also coming in in the middle. I am a boat mechanic, but OMC/Johnson, and 1 customer with a 1999 mastercraft. I own a 23 foot sail boat...done with power boats at my age. I also used to restore old international scouts, so I know my way around the old stuff.
Here is the story. Andrew and his dad have been restoring this boat. His dad was in the middle of rewiring the dash with new guages and he had a massive heart attack and died suddenly. I am trying to help him finish (at no charge of course). I have no previous experience with the nautique brand.
So I looked under the dash and already see a bunch of wiring issues. The alternator was recently replaced...however I was looking at the wiring and it LOOKS LIKE originally this boat had an externally regulated alternator...I found three wires going to a little box on the back of the motor, and it looks like a voltage regulator...right next to the solenoid...from my scout experience I think it is an external regulator and someone tried to do the GM 1 wire conversion/upgrade. However it is not done correctly....some more scooby doo-ing and I see that that this boat apparently also had an AMP gauge, which was replaced with a volt meter....
The wiring I see now The large orange wire from the back of the alternator goes up to the dash to the volt meter...from there they slave power to the key switch, from there is a host of sh*t wrong I will deal with later....
So my question to start with is
1. is there a schematic for this boat...usually with boats you are on your own with wiring but being a quality Nautique i thought I might get lucky
2. Was this boat originally externally regulated
I guess thats all I have for the moment....
I am sorry if it's confusing...I am coming into the middle of a mess and trying to help....
1 other issue that popped up was after Andrew replaced the alternator, when holding the steering wheel one gets "shocked" with A/C voltage...any ideas?
gonna break out the meter and start working it out....just thought I would post to see if I could get some insight as I slog forward
the boat has been flawless previously, however andrew finally put in a new stereo and after a day at the lake the battery was dead....However i noticed with the wiring that I don't think the battery was EVER being charged by the alternator...however they trickle charged it religously between outings and I thin they just never noticed it wasn't charging.......
cheers
Dave
