I am not a expert but I don't understand why they couldn't make a 16 or 17 inch prop that would work without a different v drive? There is about 3 inches of clearance on the boat where the prop is.

It's not about making the prop fit. They're going from 1.48:1 drive ratio to 2:1 drive ratio in the V-drive. Therefore, they can put a higher pitch prop on the boat.

I guess the question is, how would a say 17x12 on the 1.48:1 compare to the 17x17 on a 2:1. I know the heavily weighted G boats are running 15x12 currently.

Here's some clarification on the 2:1 gear reduction ratio in the 2014 G Series boats with the 409 and 450 engines. Greg noticed that there may have been a bit of confusion, and wanted to clear things up for us.

I was reading the discussion following the interview and believe there was some confusion on the new G Series gear ratio. The reduction gear is applied in the V-drive and not the transmission. The 2:1 ratio in the 2014 G Series is applied with the ZR409 and ZR450. The higher gear reduction ratio increases torque at the propeller shaft and requires the 1.25" propeller shaft also used with the XR550 and XS550. Additionally, the 1.25" propeller shaft for all 2014 applications uses 1.25" bore at the propeller instead of the machined 1.125" bore at the propeller on 2013 Model Year XR550 and XS550 applications. This changes the propeller specification for all 2014 Model Year G Series boats.

Ok, that was a lot of numbers and stuff. Thanks. But the question I have: Is that code for we had to make the shaft thicker (1.25 instead of 1.125) so the prop does not bust off, probably due to creating too big and heavy of a boat without actually sizing up the shaft, til 2nd model year?

Even Steve Jobs apologized when Iphone had problems...maybe Nautique should come clean.

What that means is the larger diameter prop requires more torque. The V-Drive ratio changed to increase the torque and a larger shaft is needed to handle the increased torque.
