2014 G23 450 initial impressions

Today I got the chance to check out the local stores G23 with the 450 in it. The changes for 2014 are very subtle but nicely done. I like the black bandging vs the chrome badging for 2013. I also like the polk head unit for 2014. The lighted cup holders are pretty nice, im sure they look good at night. The surf pipe really quiets the exhaust down, all you hear now is pretty much drivetrain noise. The new 17 inch prop is massive. We loaded the boat to full ballast 2850 and with me(200lbs) and one other guy(250lbs) we were able to get to 23.7mph from a dead dig in 7.3 seconds. I was pretty impressed. I havent gotten on my buddies 14 550 G23 to compare, but I was impressed with what the 450 did. I love the G23, and cant wait to get in one.

Another cool option is that there is a red backlighting on the top of the engine cover to light up the cover....very cool.

7.3 seconds to 23.7mph with full ballast and two adults on the boat. Top speed was 38.5mph 5600 rpms

That makes the 409 and 450 look much more desireable now! I wonder what the 409 will clock at. That is a big cost savings if a 409 can be used.

The 450 yes but I wouldn't put the 409 in one IMHO. Just too much weight even with a bigger prop, I'm not sure it would get to surfing speed when loaded down with people, ballast and equipment with a 409. There is another string in here about surfing behind a G and we think it is the inability to reach surfing speed that is the reason the wake isn't shaping up. I'd def drive one loaded down with people and ballast before I'd even think about a 409.

My buddy has a 13 G23 that had the 409 and I have been behind it several times and never had a complaint for power. Most of the time there was 6-8 adult men on it with full ballast also. I agree that it doesnt have the power of the 450 or 550, but it does very well for how big a boat it is. I wouldnt be worried about having a 409 G23 if the price was right.

It'll be intersting to see what they do for props with the 550's. Maybe neither Nautique nor ACME will do anything, but I have to imagine that if the 450 hole shot is close to that of the 550, they will do something to get a bigger difference between the two engines. Maybe they'll bump up into the 16" range?

I wonder if they channged to angle of the prop shaft. That pics makes it look as if there is just as much room between the hull and prop as the 15" versions. It looks like a 19' or even 20" prop is possible to fit.

Bsurfin, please check the prop size on the 550 when you see it, get the number off the prop.
