G23 Prop Fell Off .....

I will be first to say that if they don't recall all of them they are a bunch of jerks. You are not the first guy this happened to that has done nothing wrong.

To just fix the broken ones without a recall is unconscionable. It is too much unreasonable risk of being stranded in the middle of a lake, and potentially dangerous to the occupants if a storm comes up, and of course opens up to so much more damage if you then are stranded and are blown against rocks or what ever.

How can you possibly be out there in a g23 or g25 with what you paid and have piece of mind? Maybe they can get away with a special shaft that is a larger diameter in last 6 inches or so.

Why is everyone raising a fuss about there not being a service bulletin from Nautique for this? If I remember correctly, there is, indeed, one. The original poster asked his dealer if it applied to his boat, but the dealer said it did not. Maybe it's possible that the dealer just didn't do good enough research on it before saying that it didn't apply to his boat.

^^^ upgraded 1.25" shafts on all 2014s+. 4... lets say an even 10 failed propshafts on nearly 900 2013 Gs.

For 2014:

-550 motor is 1 1/8 shaft with 15" prop
-450 motor is 1 1/4 shaft with 17" prop

Actually Ryan is right, I was misinformed. They are all 1.25" on the 2014

Correct, Acme 2261 is the OEM prop on 2014 550s, its the 1.25" version of the 2247.

I got a response today from nautique saying they will be replacing the shaft with the 1.25" one as well as the prop. I would assume it will be the Acme 2261. Do you know if this prop handles exactly the same as the 2247? I really liked the performance of the 2247 and don't really want the boat to deviate from that.

Good to know that Correct Craft is taking care of you. Make sure it is new NEW spec shaft they are installing.

No, that is not correct. All 2014 G series boats will have different props than 2013 boats, even the 550 boats.

Its not torque that shears the shaft. It is a combination of torque and bending cycles because the shaft is spinning and the prop is cantilevered past the last bearing. This fatigue can be exaggerated if a shaft is not properly aligned.

Stress over time is called "fatigue" and is the single biggest cause of catastrophic design failures.

Clearly....the prop diameter/load is way too much for the shaft diameter. Isn't this the same shaft size as my 330 direct drive?

I'd suggest (although not calculated) the shaft diameter (or maybe area) should go up proportional to engine horsepower.

Partially correct, partially incorrect. It is in fact torque that will twist the shaft to the point of shearing as shown in the picture. The torque of the motor multiplied by the reduction of the trans/v-drive is one side of it, the size of the prop resisting that torque is the other. Prop sizes tend to get larger as cubic inches increase. Supercharging has the same effect as adding cubes.

Small block boats with the 1.23 and 1" shafts along with their common ~13x16 prop sizes are at the upper end of the acceptable strength limit of normal driveshafts. Mastercrafts from the 80's with small blocks and Powerslot (1.5:1) transmissions ran 1-1/8". Same goes for all of the v-drive CC's that end up with a 1.5:1 reduction... 1-1/8" shafts for those small block boats (90's through current) as well. Correct Craft deemed the Python powered (496-502ci big block) direct drive boats with 1.23 transmissions to require 1-1/8" shafts too.

Greg Meloon's comment about going to 1.25" shafts was as a direct result of the 2:1 reduction transmission coming for 2014- not necessarily an admission that the 1-1/8" were insufficient on 2013 boats that had 1.5:1 reductions. That being said, I have seen some boats push the normal envelope and start breaking shafts... my buddy has a 500hp 408w in front of a 1.23 and he has twisted off several 1" shafts just like this G. The 550SC motor with a 1.5:1 reduction seems to be pushing the limits of a 1-1/8" shaft in a similar fashion.

Good on CC for fixing this issue. Its not a cheap upgrade- prop, shaft, strut and packing gland (presumably dripless) will all have to change to the larger diameter.

I read this, however I didn't laugh or find it funny. This is a major flaw and should be fixed on all G series boats.

My discussion with Nautique, and it was reinterated several times by different people in response to questions I asked at the factory is that it was an issue with a suppliers batch of prop shafts primarily during the first of the Gs off of the production line, and the bulletin was sent out to dealers who sold those boats. When they found out about the issue with the shaft/supplier they replaced each when the dealer contacted them after referencing the recall notice sent to them. I am not sure it was a design flaw near as much as a supplier quality control issue, which ultimately Nautique is responsible for. Since the majority of these catastrophic failures occurred in the early boats, and OP was not the original buyer of the boat, I would say that Nautique is doing exactly what they are supposed to do, which is support their product and warranty. With a bad batch of shafts, the diameter likely would not matter, therefore, replacing each shaft after the problem was identified and rectified makes little sense. That being said, I would love a larger diameter shaft which could handle a 17" prop on my 550, but early failures which are being handled well through the warranty process are not a reason to call for the replacement of every shaft on the water. Just my opinion. I am glad that the OP had no problem getting this taken care of through Nautique. Just like the warranty is designed to do.
