With the speedos on your boat, my experience was that 99 out
10 times, something was stuck in the pitot, or something
was blocking the tube between the pitot and speedo guage.

You can use a needle to make sure the hole in the pitot is not clogged.
You can disconnect the tube at the speedo guage and pitot, and blow air
    back through it.

        Wish I did. I had a 98SN, and I now have a 01 SAN. On each
I have experienced periods where the depth finder goes out for no apparent reason.
Happens more often when I'm in the delta or shallow rivers, less often
in deep lakes. It always comes back, so I've never worried about it.
I'll be interested to see what feedback you get from others on this
site. Maybe I'll "fix" my depth finder once you uncover the secret.

i can't believe nobody has thrown this one at you, but (and i'm sorry, but i just can't pass up the opportunity!)
maybe you shouldn't wear a speedo if it isn't working for you!

Depth finders are not that accurate or reliable in muddy bottom lakes/rivers.

Nothing for the sonar to bounce off of reliably, so the water can cause irregularities.

Just slow down, and allow the sonar to start working again. 9Kinda sucks when pulling somebody though)

Look in your bilge, possibly near the bilge pump.

Yes, should be in the bilge area. Probably at or near the transmission.
Should be glued to the fiberglass floor.

a friend of ours, who is a well known local architect, went snow skiing with one of his clients and a group of his client's friends, girlfriends and wives, none of which he knew. the first night, as a joke, he jumped in the hot tub with all of them in a yellow thong! every time i think of that story i get the giggles!

My depth finder has a mind of its own. Most of the time it reads 2.7 ft. Once in a while if you treat it just right, it will actually tell you the correct depth for at least a few minutes. I called Teleflex(?) to inquire. They informed me that product was sold to Hummingbird. I called Hummingbird. They informed me that, unfortunately, the odd behavior was a sign of the unit going out. The best fix was to replace the unit - $99.00.
