WHAT IF G23 with a duramax diesel?

I thought id throw this out there and see if anyone thinks the same as me? Would you consider a diesel boat if it were clean burning, quiet, and most importantly 2-2.5 times more efficient?

I think everyone knows by now how much better Mpg you get with towing large loads, or just driving ...but The durability, torque, and nowadays the tunabililty of diesels is better than ever. Its nothing to have a 500hp and 1000fp of torque on a diesel, And still get exceptional fuel economy. Try that with your gasser! When you look around all they offer is lower liter motors... I think Epic used a hyundai motor. Be nice to see a big dog motor to compete with the super charged 550.

I been riding my friends g23 and ive heard 4.5 gph to 10gph depending on loads. (450 motor) I think i could cut that in half.

I own a f-450 with the 6.4 and a dodge mega cab with the 6.7. Love my diesels but not sure of one in my boat. You could turn a huge screw!! With the urea it would make it cleaner burning. Plus the added 2o+k price increase might severely limit your buying crowd!! Just my .02.

I can tell you that Nautique has been testing diesels in their boats for years, and none have provided the performance they require at a price point that makes sense.

@nyryan thanks for the youtube direction. There is another offshore boat that is 2.5 times more efficient... So much so that the ban it from racing for a while... PPE diesel did it... Was called the warlock. Im facinated with the power/ economy difference!

So you have been riding your friends G and you really have no idea if your burning 4 gals of his gas or 10gals of his gas when you go out? How much money are you giving him per set may I ask?

And yeah a more fuel efficient long lasting diesel would he cool and all but these boats are way over priced already!!! Stupid stupid stupid that we have 100k plus wake boats. I don't understand who can really afford these.

Actually i know exactly what the gas usage is... When talking with others who have G23s there are various reports. Nobody is getting better than 4 or 4.5 unless its parked. Just observation. We ride at lunch one run apiece.... 20 per day. I own a 236 with the zr6...It uses about 2.5 to 3gph even loaded.

Cool glad u know, would have been nice if you had said what was actually used...per set instead of the 4-10gal general quote.

For your 236 that's great fuel economy. My 08 210 with 2k over stock uses exactly 3 gals per 6.5 mile set with the 343. My buddies x-15 4gals same run and my other buddies star slightly more than that. I'm looking to possibly get a 230 so good to know.

Say the boat is used 1000 hours averaging 5 hpg @ $4/gallon for a $20k fuel bill. If a diesel got 3hpg assuming things are equal that's $12k over 1000 hours. If u owned it for 10 years u r saving $800/year with a diesel and so if you're spending $100k up front it makes sense there are few diesels offered in performance towboats, they cannot justify it...at this point anyway. Will it be diesel or electric after petrol? Similar to the 3/4 ton truck arguments in ponying up for the diesel or big block, if you are pulling well within the limits of a cheaper proven technology, why spend $8k on an unneeded option? Because it is awesome!
i love my duramax, it is impressive what a simple tuner will do for performance but I am not sure how I would dig it in a boat? I don't think I would but I totally understand the reasoning.
Marinised stock 400hp tunable to 700 reliable hp+ diesel in a G? The guys who are scratching that check would consider that plus the TORQUE for that monster, no?

There is always a point of view you dont think of... Thats whats great about forums!

I love my Dmax as well! Its quiet, clean, never blows smoke, and i get amazing mpg for the load.

It just stands to reason if you can afford the G23...you can afford the mega fuel bill!

I think the biggest drawback to diesel is the narrow power band. This would make throttle response not so great.

You could be left with a huge trade off between hole shot and top speed determined by prop choice. Maybe if you had an electronically controlled variable pitch prop to compensate . Or some continuously variable transmission?

As for props... Most diesels can run more of a speed prop due to the nearly double the torque. And reach top speed.

You can go to diesel place.com, the D-Max Store built that MC. They have a thread showing what they had to create to complete the project.

I've been following the thread since the beginning, it's a pretty cool project.

i did question the fumes because I surf a lot but now there are surf pipes to address that.

If you refer to the "powerband" as in the sweet spot of a diesel motor being 2000ish rpm then yeah, power and efficiency lie there. Getting the best mpg is often achieved by staying under that point as mpg plummet with minimal increases over that point.
However, I mean a huge however, if you rode/owned a properly equipped modern diesel with even JUST a 3-500 hundred dollar tuner...you are in for a real treat because the powerband starts with squealing tires at the light and continues well past 100 miles an hour. It is hard to overstate how impressive these trucks can be. I love the fact that the thing weighs over 3 tons, has four doors- roomy, 4 wheel drive, can pull a 25# dump trailer, get 18+mpg and throw you back in the seat with a ear to ear grin. Awesome IMHO.
i didn't get it as I always subscribed to overkill and too much maintenance before switching from my beloved v10. My buddies always under sold the diesel argument, I could never justify ownership but I think the fun factor tips the scale if fuel econonomy and capability don't.
Anyway sorry To stray off the topic, I guess wicked would be the only way to describe a towboat set up with an oil burner.
