Boat Shed caught fire and extensive damage to SV-211

It has been a while since I have been on here, but I have a question... I am currently offshore and I just found out that my boat shed caught fire and my SV-211 has extensive damage. I currently have Ski Safe, but it is too early to tell whether or not it will be covered or if it is a total loss. If not a total loss, would someone recommend a repair shop in the Conroe area and does anyone know if I would be covered in this situation?

This just happened a few hours ago and girlfriend is on her way to the lakehouse where the boat shed is, so details are unknown. She did speak with the firemen and they stated the fire was started from a battery charger for a golf cart that was in the shed with the boat and that the boat has extensive damage. I am sick to my stomach and cannot get home for 20 more days

Thanks for any advice on this

That's terrible news. Isn't the Nautique dealer there on hwy 105 right across from Fajita Jacks a maintenance and repair shop too? I would start there. If they can't do the work I am certain they will be able to offer advice on a reputable shop close.

Thanks Cedarcreek, but it looks like a total loss, still waiting on pictures

Sorry to hear that, I would be sick too! When you get your insurance call Phil or Andrew at Buxton in DFW. They are great people and have connections all over and can help you find a replacement if you don't find one on your own.

Was all your gear in the shed too?

Isnt Dockside Marine the south Houston Nauty Dealer?

Seems like you are gonna be already involved with a CC dealer for the OEM parts ordering and replacement.... Suggests it should be most efficient $$$ wise to go thru your local dealer first to see where they are, hopefully fully covered by Ski safe... Keep us updated!

            Maxx,

Fiberglass boats burn faster than dry straw. When a hull catches fire, they burn to the water line....if they're in the water.

You know I'm in Katy and offer to help in any way although if your GF already looked at it hopefully she got you some photos.

Note you need to check your policy and you might quickly find a lawyer who could look at your storage contract to see if someone else needs to be paying for the loss. Your lease probably says they are responsible for nothing but claims could reach as far as the charger manufacturer. Who knows but check on it....it might also be that ski safe pays the legal fees to get someone else to pay.

Please let us know how it goes with ski safe.

Thanks for all the support. I have the pictures, but honestly I cannot stand to look at them... it is a total loss, all the interior is burnt, the hull is completely destroyed. I built the storage shed on my property at a lakehouse that I own, so this is on me, for which I dont have insurance on the detached shed. The boat and a golf cart were the only things in there and as stated, the golf cart battery charger started the fire. The shed rollup door is melted shut and the building is about to fall in. GF is trying to contact SkiSafe, but nothing yet, maybe becuase of the weekend. We will find out if the boat is covered by SkiSafe or not. If it is not covered, it will just add to the heartbreak. I have a feeling that it will not be covered or that I will have problems. Even more disappointment is that I was almost finished paying the loan off.

Airtool, thanks for the offer to help, I will let you know. I know you guys understand that it was more than a boat, much more!! What sucks is that I am in the middle of the Indian Ocean and cannot do anything about the situation.

Thanks again to all for the kind words and support

I understand completely it can be frustrating the way we work. I was going to tell some funny stories of my last trip being stuck in the Pacific but I'm thinking not much is funny right now.

One thing to note is if there is no relief anywhere, you may be able to deduct the "loss" from your income and at least recover by your marginal tax rate.

We've never met but I know we've shared many pm's or posts about what I can't remember....either way....this summer we should meet. You can pick the vice LOL.

AirTool, We should meet this summer... and hopefully this nightmare will be all over with by then. I did think about the tax write off, so that is something. I guess I am going through "Why Me?" phase right now, I will keep in touch

Best of luck Maxx! Wait until you hear definitive from the insurance company.

What a horrible story! You're out of town, there's nothing you can do. You need to be calm and take care of things when you get home safely.

I lost a boat in a fire some years ago, it was fully covered under my boat policy without any hassles, if you are on an agreed value policy that will determine what you get, if not the insurance company will come up with a number.
Here in Illinois homeowners does not cover motorized vehicles, only small engine stuff like mowers, had a pickup in the garage among other things, which only had liabity insurance, so that one was on me.
Sorry for your misfortune and good luck

Let us know how the Ski Safe insurance process goes. There are quite a few on this site that use their services and would like to know if their claims services are top notch.

I will let you guys know as soon as I get word. I did get an email from the underwriter, but she stated that she cannot say if I am covered or not. That didn't bring the good new that i had hoped, so I am continuing to wait on an answer!

If they don't cover it a lot of is will be switching companies!! I had to list the storage facility on my policy so I would think it would be covered. Keep us informed.

Yeah I switched to SS last summer. I did "up" the option to where more was covered. There are a lot of loopholes in a marine policy.

Here is a horror story for y'all. Remember the cruise control switches on the ford trucks that was always powered by 12v and then would leak brake fluid and catch fire. I know of one case where the owner got the letter of the recall and didn't change it...one night his truck caught on fire in the garage and burned down half of his house. Insurance denied his claim because he didn't respond to the recall.

I'm sure it went to court but I don't know the outcome.
