87 naitique oil gauge and alarm problem

I have an 87 nautique w/ a 454. The oil pressure gauge reads 80psi and the red light is on. The audible alarm is broken but I assume it would be sounding if it was working. There is only one wire coming off the sending unit. Does the light work off the gauge or is there supposed to be a seperate wire? I don't belive that the 80psi on the gauge is correct. Any ideas of what I should check? Thanks for any input?

I'm not sure of the range of your sender, but if you can find out the correlation between ohms of resistance and oil pressure, you could check the sender with an ohm meter to see if it agrees with the gauge. I personally would buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge from a parts store ($30.00) and check to see what oil pressure actually is. After you know what the actual oil pressure is you can start troubleshooting the sender and gauge or start looking for more serious problems.
