    Cracked FCT3 on Newly-Purchased 210

ADMIN NOTE: After careful review of this situation, I have decided to change the title of this thread. It is misleading, and not representative of actual circumstances. For that reason, I am changing the title of this thread from "Recall on FCT3 Not Honored" to "Cracked FCT3 on Newly-Purchased 210". Nothing else in this thread has been changed. I am just changing the title so that it does not create confusion for people who come across it in the future.

Furthermore, I would suggest that anyone who comes across this thread in the future, and is interested in the contents, should read the entire thread.

    Hey guys,
So, as some of you might know, my 2008 SV211 was destroyed in a fire in January and Ski Safe paid the value of the boat. We found a used boat and had it inspected by a marine survey, mechanic and we inspected it and it was found to be in good shape, so we bought it. When we get it home, we discovered that the FCT3 tower had two large gashes in the base. I jumped on here and found that there had been a recall from Roswell years ago, so I thought they may honor this. We called our local dealer and they referred us to Nautique, after calling them they referred us to Roswell. Roswell stated that because they had sent a recall notice to all the dealers and owners in 2010, that they would not honor the recall and that I would have to purchase the bases from my local dealer at full price and pay to have them installed. Costing anywhere from $700-800 each plus shipping, plus install.

Although, I do understand that a warranty is a warranty, but a recall is a recall. Am I wrong for thinking that this should be honored? I have to say that I am disappointed on how we were treated by all, spending most of the day on the phone and being told "sorry, we cannot help you". I would even have felt better if they offered to give a discount since, again, it was a recall on their product, not negligence from the owner. What do you guys think?

Roswell imports their towers from CHINA. Doesn't surprise me at all. I wish Nautique would go back to the Diamondback towers which were made right in Cocoa, FL by American labor.

I think its crap. Maybe ask them if it as serious issue. If they say yes, tell them to fix it. If they say no, tell them you're going to use it as is and if someone dies you'll let the jury decide.

Okay it sounds warped but that is just crap for them to be that way. IMO, it is their problem they admitted to. Time doesn't expire on mistakes. They need to make it right or face eternal ****ation.

I am sure most, if not all people have had this fix or towers replaced, but FYI... Roswell has stated that this was never a recall it was only a service bulletin and that they are not going to honor the damage. They are willing to sell the dealer the parts and then for me to purchase. They will also charge me to have it painted by Ramlin and pay for shipping to the dealer, then I will also be responsible for the install.
I guess I expected a bit more for faulty engineering to a major product associated with Nautique

I think it is crap for not honoring it, but they called again and have reduced the price a bit... so far the cost is approximately $1200 plus shipping and plus install for the pair

Maybe just take it to a tuna tower shop in galveston and see if they can stitch it up but you would have to touch up the painting. Probably that chinese aluminum is not very weldable.

I'm picky as all get out. I would probably just hammer it down and caulk it up.

I'd also look to the seller for some $$ if it was mis-represented. ESPECIALLY if it was a dealer. I don't care it it "was" inspected.

Thanks Airtool, 2014 has not been a good year so far. I looked at the crack and I agree, the aluminum doesnt look very weldable and may do more damage trying to fix it. Do you think the cracks have weakened the structure?

We contacted the dealer and of course "sold as is" and cannot help due to it was a consignment... and they are a nautique dealer, lol

What gets me is that someone attempted to hide it by painting the crack with black paint... it worked, we all missed it

I would question the inspections that were done prior to purchase. I have had a lot of experience dealing with marine surveyors, and if this obvious crack from frozen water inside the tower was missed by them and yourself, I would wonder if it was inspected at all or happened after you took delivery. Also good marine surveyors will do a history check on models to ensure service alerts and anything else have been completed.

The FCT-3 has a ton of welding on it. A good welder should be able to make it happen. We have cut up center sections and had them re welded for custom applications. I bet it will save you a ton of cash if a custom welder can get after it with some mad tig skills. The issue was water intrusion and freezing. If it was stated as a service bulletin and not a recall then no go. Service bulletin=warranty period, recall=forever.

Yes, that is what roswell is saying, Service Bulletin so no go.... But on here, all report this to be a recall.... I may look to weld it, but then they will have to removed and painted... I don't know what direction to take, honestly just disappointed with Roswell, but then again, somebody has to pay for the product... I guess it will be me this time...SMH

Guessing the reason they went by way of Service Bulletin was because it didn't appear to be a structural defect (ie. safety related). Purely cosmetic is my guess. My truck however, had a recall for the rear pinion nut coming off causing the rear end to completely lock up. Recall (safety issue).

The legal experts can confirm if "attempted to hide it by painting the crack with black paint" could gain them some responsibility.

Ditto on the surveyor...not sure what insurance he brings....but he at least owes his inspection fee back. (and get a corner of his card cut off like we do the boy scouts when they mess up with fire or their knife)

In my opinion, the selling dealer - consignment or not - has is hands all over this and is a sack of crap. They probably made 5K on this transaction.

I hope they are reading this and they can PM me for my phone number.

Yeah...you guessed it. I'm traveling and stuck offshore. It does make me tell the truth.

Agreed, but would this safety issue? would this not weaken the structure? and if this tower crashes down and kills someone?
I have had service bulletins on my Ford also and it is way out of warranty and the issues were not safety and were honored without question. The one that comes to mind is the 8th glow plug faulty, which entails removing the front cap to get to and they honored it. The truck is 2007 and this was last year.... I guess Ford is a stronger company to handle recalls/service bulletins... it sucks though

those cracks are from freeze damage right? Water leaking in... not having a way to escape.... then a freeze comes.

I got angry just reading this thread. What dealer sold you this boat??
