I am considering purchasing a 2013 g23 409hp but I am hearing that it is underpowered. Is this true?

Jwasik- describe how you would use the boat and folks could provide you better feedback.
Underpowered specifically for what? How heavy? What sports?2019 G23 450

admittedly, I am a novice to this class of boats. We have been a long-time bow rider family - used for EVERYTHING. Fishing, skiing, tubing, wake boarding, cruising, etc.
The kids are now entering teen years and we are looking to spend more time wake surfing and wake boarding. I realize this boat is WAY above our skill levels, but it is beautiful - we love the layout.
We will be surfing and boarding - usually with 5 or 6 other people in the boat. Our home lake is on the smaller side for this big of a boat so I will want to get on plane quickly.
I will need to research the prop size. Thanks for the replies. I have a LOT to learn.

The 13 had a different gear reduction. When they swapped in 2014 it made a huge difference in the 409/450. That being said, there isn't a massive difference in the 409 vs. the 450 in the 13 model. We have a customer out on our local water that has a 409 13 and loves it. Everyone talks about adding ballast to G series boats which is completely un needed so that isn't a concern. For god's sake it has 2800 lbs below the floor...... It's more about the torque curve of the engine and not the big glamorous peak HP numbers. The peak HP on a 6.0 doesn't even come around until 5600rpms or so. If you look at the torque curve (which PCM doesn't supply) I would guess with 90% accuracy that the curve of the 409 comes in sooner and harder than the 450. When these engines are at their operating rpm (surfing or boarding) they are running in the range of peak torque production anyways. How many of you guys go on WOT runs across the lake with no ballast in G series boats?Zach@n3boatworks.com

Jeff has some sweet acceleration charts he posted a while back. I would love to see the dyno charts but there is a reason they aren't available.Zach@n3boatworks.com

jwasik- the way you describe your use.... put an ACME 2315 prop on there and it will 90% or better of whatever you ask of it. with the 2315, it will be a 35-36mph top speed boat... but will have plenty of pull with full OEM ballast, full gas and a boat load of folks/gear. you will get the world class 23mph wake everyone raves about... and the world class layout and quality the G series is known for.
now, if you wannt go heavier than OEM ballast, and add extra ballast... and get into monster waist/tummy/chest high surf and thigh/waist high 23mph wakes.... this isnt the boat for you.
as important is the discussion is about the 409 performance in a '13 G23 is the price.... hopefull it reflects having the 409, they do take a pretty hard hit on resale.2019 G23 450
