Water cooler switch

I was getting my boat ready for spring and noticed that the valve for the water coolant may have been closed. Does anyone know the position the valve should be in? The writing on the valve is gone. Right now the valve handle is pointing directly to the stern.

Handle across the line, or pipe, valve closed. Handle pointing down the pipe, or line, valve open

^this. If the handle is perpendicular (or at a right angle) to the valve, it's closed.
