    2014 g23 - surf and wakeboard questions

Hey guys. Posted that I'm new to nautique and getting a g23. Picked it up Friday (pictures coming) and spent all weekend on it. LOVE it!! Wow, what a boat - a real beast. I do have a couple of questions - mostly about setup.

    1. When pulling my kids wakeboarding between 17-18 mph (beginner to average skill set) only one side of the wake is clean, and it is very sensitive to passenger distribution. I played with ncrs but not much different. I also had NO ballast filled. Any thoughts on how to get a clean wake on both sides for the little guys?

    2. For surfing I put ncrs on 5, NSs on 5, and full ballast tanks, and it was great. Just checking for any fine tuning here - if I'm predominately standard surf should I not fill the stbd side? Or vice- versa? Any other tips?

    Sincerely
    Hooked neophyte.

You've got a great boat there!

On your first question, you really need to go at least 19 - 21 MPH in order for the wake to be clean behind the G23. Shorten the rope up to 55 - 65 feet. Be sure to weight the boat evenly. That should clean it right up. On the NCRS settings, please just leave it on AUTO and set the intensity on HIGH. There is really no good reason to ever change this (except when surfing). The computer will always keep NCRS on the optimal setting, and if you don't know what you're doing, manually configuring the NCRS while wakeboarding or pulling any rider at speed can actually be quite dangerous. I have owned many Nautiques over the years, and I have been in tons of G-Series boats, and I have never ever found a reason to operate NCRS manually when in wakeboard mode.

For surfing, you've got your NSS settings backwards. The best surf wake from the G23 will be at 10.8 - 11.3, full factory ballast (all, not just surf side), NCRS between 3 and 5, and NSS at ZERO. Running NSS at 5 is its LEAST-ENGAGED setting, and I would not recommend that.

Another tip - when you're NOT towing a rider, use the BACK TO DOCK setting instead of just turning Zero Off off. That way, NCRS stays engaged (in AUTO) and helps the boat's performance and ride.

Yes they are somewhat weight sensitive..... get your passengers to sit stilll and stay put...... add a little ballast to the side thats washed out. easy fix.

Post up a pic of your wave, my setup varies greatly from Jeff's, we run faster as we have bigger guys, they need the speed:

      11.6- 11.9mph
      Full OEM ballast
1100 in the surf side trunk maxed out
      300-500 in the other trunk.
      200lbs lead in the bow
      NCRS 3-4
      Surf Vert 2-3

      .

All of these guys are big 200lb+ over 6ft

And for kids or beginners, NCRS 4, Surf Vert 2, full OEM ballast... maybe 500lbs in the surf side trunk. 11.4mph

I do like Nyryan's set up for a long session with advanced surfers. However the additional weight isn't "necessary". I'm 215lbs and ride just fine with stock setup with maybe a slight cheat of "boat meat" to the surf side. You do need your NSS on full deployment with the NCRS on auto (makes the boat plane out much faster). The only prob with nyryan's setup up is that it removes the ability to just switch sides on the fly, and I always have a few goofy foots in the boat. If you need more size on the wave slow down a bit, for my size I run around 10.5-11. A lot of surfing is technique along with your board choice. Get your technique nailed and you will be able to ride almost any size wave. Aggressive boards are going to be MUCH harder to hold in a pocket and carve. That said, I would LOVE to ride nyryan's monster wave! (For reference I'm in a 2013 G23 with the 550)

I've had success getting a clean wake at that speed. Try adding a little bit of ballast to the side that is washing out. While driving, just let the ballast fill on the bad side until it cleans up.

NSS at ZERO? Did they change that for 2014? Last season we had it set around 3-5 depending on how many people were on the boat. We assumed that when it was closer to 5, the blade was extended out or fully engaged on one side.

No changes.... As Jeff said, NSS at 0 is the most engaged (extended). We run NCRS at 5 & NSS at 3. Sometimes we'll mess with NSS between 0 & 3. But 5 & 3 will guarantee a great wave.
Depending on people we run about 2000lbs of plumbed in extra ballast, but with or without extra ballast 5 & 3 will get it done for you....

I too thought NSS at 0 was least extended and 5 was most. When I am using stock ballast and NSS 0 the wave is long and low as I increase to 5 the wave gets steeper and shorter. I thought that was due the NSS diverting more water as it extended farther into the water.
