07 220 Team Edition: I need the good & bad

I am helping a friend purchase a boat for his family. They used to have a I/O and are making the transition over to a V-drive. He has found a Nautique that he is interested in. I just don't know much about it. Will you guys help me/him out with your knowledge?

It looks like it has the exhaust on the side. Side swipe I think it's called? Is that still an option on the current models or did they get away from that? Is it louder than the traditional transom exhaust?

Really any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You sure its not a Centurion? I thought Sideswipe was their thing. Seemed like more trouble than it was worth. I don't think I have seen any type of factory side exhaust on a Nautique.

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming!

That's good you don't notice it being any louder. It is a Nautique. I'm not sure they are exhaust ports, they just looked like some in the picture?

What are in those two little boxes on both sides behind the driver and observers seat?

Those are the air inlet and outlet for the blower... Located where they are they are also good for letting water in the boat if you lean the boat real hard for surfing. They moved them to the back on the newer boats. The comparison of the 220 to the 210 comes up pretty often I think there were a couple in the last few months. The 220 has a unique interior layout that I don't care for but if you like it then its no big deal. The general consensus is that the wake is good but its easier to get a 210 to be better and if you want a lot more room then get the 230. Coming from an I/O then all the nitpicking over slightly better wake is less important than condition and price.

Here are a couple of old threads I saw just off the bat...

For what it's worth, the people who don't have a 220 complain about the layout, I've never heard anyone who actually has one say anything bad about it.

I own a 07 220 and enjoy the layout and all the compartments. Im not a professional wakeboarder or surfer by any means but this boat throws an exceptional wake if evened out correctly. Its a fun boat and my family and I enjoy it just about every weekend.

Loved my 220. Box behind driver is an integrated trash can. Box behind observer seat is storage up top and an integrated cooler in the bottom half. Great boat with tons of room for peeps and storage. Great surf wave too.

Coming from any I/O they will LOVE the 220! A 220 will make a great wake surf wake, and the boarding wake will scare them at stock ballast at first. The 220 has a reputation for being finicky for side to side, but with practice it's not that bad to balance out, and the wake is pretty good. It's steep (not as steep as the OG 210's) but has a decent ramp to approach the wake.
Interior layout seems to fall into the love/hate camps, I personally really liked it. A friend had one, and after spending some time on it, the "humps" are really convenient and add real functionality to the boat.

Driven several 220s. Never owned one. The layout, I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either. I will say this, I hated driving the 220 with the small V8. I really felt like it needed the bigger motor even with Stock ballast. This was CC's first liner boat, so it was heavy and built like a tank.

I do agree with the folks above, they are tender for side to side.

                    IMO - unless it is a steal, I would find a 2008 210.

+1 on this. I always thought it seemed like a strange layout but after spending time in my buddies over the past 2 seasons it makes a lot of sense. It is very comfortable whether looking back to watch the action or looking forward and cruising. There is tons of storage and places to hide ballast. The wakeboard wake is great but just takes a little trial and error to dial in. The surf wave is awesome and probably the best Nautique surf boat prior to NSS/G. I can't comment on the base engine but with the ZR-6 it has plenty of power even when sacked out.

                        All great information. Thank you!!!
I read all of the linked threads and even found a few youtube videos that helped me understand the layout. It is funky IMO. My friend and his wife seem to like it, so that's what counts.

How does that wake changing lever work?
The details show the engine @ 375 HP. Is that the upgraded motor or the standard?
In the on the water videos it looks like it almost has spray pockets on it?

The Hydrogate is activated by a lever next to the driver which lowers or raises a vertical gate at the stern of the boat. Push the lever forward and the gate gets pushed down which raises the rear of the boat and pushes the bow down. This will give a better slalom wake (although I can't imagine it gets very good) and improve fuel efficiency when cruising. Pull the lever back and the gate is retracted and the rear of the boat will sink to it's natural position and give you a better wakeboard wake. It can also be used to fine tune a surf wave a little bit.

Yes the 375 HP motor is the upgraded ZR-6 which is closed cooled 6 liter. The stock engine is the 5.7 liter Excal which makes 330-343 HP depending on model year.

How many hours are on it? Its about $5000 more than what we paid for ours two years ago but our trailer wasn't nearly as nice and we have the smaller engine. As well it looks like the rear platform is upgraded to the sea deck which is alot nicer than the hard pad through out the rest of the boat.
