My boat has a beige cover that does not touch the vinyl (hanging cover over the boat as it sits on a lift). It developed pink algae growth within 12 months but only on one cushion. I would suggest it is the combination of heat and humidity that allows the algae to grow in certain materials used as backing by some vinyl suppliers.
