Swc, first words were "I've never tried it before". Not only did he want a pull behind my boat but he also wanted to use my gear. WTF?

NYRyan, I normally would have not been as nice but figured it wasn't worth it. I have a very unique/distinguishable boat and wouldn't want anyone doing anything to it just because I wouldn't give them a pull.

Nauty has it right. Although it would have to be a cool one not a dumb one. Getting picky now!

I'd bs with them a lil more and see. You can meet some great people on the pond. Before I bought my nauti I have flagged people down with a ski on the end of the dock and now I'm teaching them to foot behind my toy.

Ya, screw that! I'd give a polite laugh and say no. Sometimes it's fun to pull those types of people for the entertainment factor though. I had a guy once tell me how just shreds the course, so my ski partner and I took him for a set. It quickly become clear he'd never run a course before. The out-the-fronts were priceless

I grew up without a ski boat. My family would go camping every weekend when I was a kid, and every boat that came into camp, I'd run up and say, "what a cool boat, please take me for a ride or skiing or something." As a kid, I was just super excited about boats and didn't know any better. Now that I have a boat, I will gladly pull most people I meet, but there's got to be some kind of dialog with a stranger. B + D is my answer. An adult that comes right out the gate with "can you take me wakeboarding" sounds a little like a freeloader. Hang out and feel em out.

ok, i thought about this one for a while - since this thread was posted...here is what i think i would do: I would say, something like sorry, i can't today, got this that and the other to do now...But if you give me your name and phone number next time i go out i'll let you know.

That way you have given a polite excuse (lie if you want, i would) for not taking him that second. but then he has to not be anonymous by providing his personal info, and it put's it more on your schedule. if he is totally trying to stay anonymous then screw h im.......then you can see how the rest of the conversation goes....if it goes great and you get a better sense that he is a cool guy then you could actually give him a text msg down the road. if he seems like a jerk you just blow it off.

My reply: "maybe later, I just arrived and we want to chill for a while"

If they were good people I might even give them a pull later, if not I would just say sorry I don't have time today. I would be pleasant but straight up even if I had to tell them to move along and stop hanging out.

I thought about this for a while. Me and my wife talked about it. I grew up with out a lot of money, later on a friend of mine bought a $3000 boat and we got in to skiing. This guy came along with a new nautique back in the mid 90's. He taught us how to ski the course and offered us a pull. We where just stoked to sit in the boat and watch his son ski the course. That exposed me to the nuatique brand. I know that I would take them as long as they weren't swimming with weapons lol.

The funny thing is most people won't even go for a pull if you asked. Last night I was board so I drove around the lake trying to take people for a pull and not one person would go. I think most are intimidated by people with wake boats. I even tried to hold a learn to board event on the lake and the campers association turned us down as they figured it was too dangerous. anyway just my two cents.

Now with my previous remarks noted... Here's a twist.

10 days ago I managed to run over a pair of pliers on the interstate... Did a terrible rip in my expensive LT Michellen tire. Hole was too big for a plug. Tried several paces. $300 for a new tire.

I finally found a filthy tire shop that specialized in doing patches on tires from the inside.... On huge farm tractors with $1500 tires.

when I arrived the tatt'd up filthy tire guy was staring at me... Asked me if I knew him. I didn't remember him so I said no. Then about 20 mins into the $75 patch he asked my why I run LT tires on a 1/2ton Tundra.... I told him I have a 8-9,000lb wakeboat and need all the help I can get. He snaps his fingers and says "that's it!!! You gave me a pull behind your Wakesetter!!" That was 3yrs ago in 2011.

Him and his buddies had been wakeboarding behind a 17ft Bayliner and watching us surf... When we got closer he waved and with a great attitude respectfully asked for a pull... I told him and buddies sure, throw an anchor and jump on. Pulled them for about 20 mins, they had a blast. Very appreciative.

i ended up paying $25 for the patch and got a matching spare LT tire in case the patch didn't hold during the move from OK to VA!!

                      karma!

I love NYRYANS story. Not sure what I would do on the below. I have had it happen a couple times since I lived in CT. But it has happened only in CT. I feel like I have the only new WBB on the river.

That said my wife and I move a lot, so boating is how we make friends in new cities. In Asheville, I was needing a pull, out alone and watched a husband and wife skiing in a sunsetter BU. I pulled up and said, I'm new to the are, can I give you a pull behind my boat if you give me one behind my boat. They owned a Nautique 2 months later. Still friends to this day.

Knoxville - Watching a husband and wife WB behind a Supra direct drive ski boat. He was pretty good jumper, but everytime he landed, the rope snapped out of his hands into the boat. We pulled up during their break and I said we are new to the area where is the best place to ski. They said right here. I said your pretty good, can I give you a tip, he said sure. I said try this rope on your next set and handed him a real WB rope without stretch. He was using a ski rope. Friend to this day. They introduced us to other boats we hung with for years until we moved.

Knoxville - Had a person pull up and say any chance I can get a pull. They were in a 23 sea ray. After we chatted some the wives hit it off, so him and I went for a ski while they sat on his boat. He was good skier, so it was fun. That night was a marina event and after they said we are going on a cruise with some friends would you like to join in their boat. We did and had a blast.

Hartford - we haven't had much luck on skiing friends. Not sure why. Now with a baby, well no one is talking to us on the water.

Again not sure how I would handle the below. Depends on the situation, timing and my mood.

Great stories! I've met quite a few people on the lake that after talking to them for a little bit I've taken them out boarding. This situation was different IMO.

I guess I don't really understand people's responses. I didn't always have a boat, let alone a nice one. There are many times in my life I would have loved to get a set from someone else. I currently own a very nice wakeboarding boat and still have a desire to try out other boats to see if I like them better.

I would not hesitate to give someone a pull assuming they had their own gear and were willing to pitch an appropriate amount for gas. I do not understand where it came off that he felt it was your "duty" to pull him. He was just asking. Then again, I would never ask without making it clear in my question that I can pitch a 20 for gas.

I purely view that as someone without access to such a nice ride wanting to try a "pro" wake. My answer would have simply been "as long as you pitch in a $20 for gas, sure". Now what isn't clear is if you had other plans. If you and your crew were set to relax in the party cove, then my response would have been "throw me your number and I'll shoot you a text next time we're out".

I don't understand the need to tell someone off for asking for a pull? Shouldn't we be trying to share the stoke?

^^^ The 550 G uses so much gas I'd be embarrassed to tell a newbie or an outsider how much their gas costs... Don't want to put then in a situation where they can't afford perhaps. Easily $40-$80 an hour when going heavy with decent ballast.

so if I offer I don't expect the obligatory $20 for gas. Enjoy the pull.
