    Co poisoning

My wife has started her research project for residency on carbon monoxide in boats. We started the other day. Larry from Fresh air has helped us out with supplying us with some of the equipment. A big thumbs up to him for that.

i know lots of people think that because there boat has cats that they are not getting much co exposure. I mounted the detector on the back of the sun pad on the transom. The numbers where huge. This was a windy day, so I imagine a calm day it will be worse. We will be testing more spots on the boat this week. This was just more of a heads up to make sure you don't let anyone sit on the back swim platform or transom seats while surfing. I would also suggest turning off the boat while filling ballast as we where getting high numbers during this as well.

Anyway just wanted give everyone heads up , maybe think about a fresh air exhuast. I know I can't wait till we are able to put ours back on after the testing.

Will be nice to see this published with findings especially where people who are surfing near the back of the boat and effects. If the study shows significant decreases, I would guess, many people will be looking for companies to retrofit boats.

I would be interested in the before and after numbers too. I know Larry has some information on his site. I have a FAE on my boat and while I can't say we noticed a difference in how we feel I like having the peace of mind since we surf more than wakeboard now.

Plus it made the boat significantly quieter.

Larry was great to deal with and I'm a very happy FAE owner.

This may be a dumb question, but with the FAE, does co pollute the water?

I don't think its a dumb question at all. I wondered the same thing . I think the fae is a cool invention but I don't have one yet. I don't really have any complaints with my stock setup. But curious on the readings as well as the same reading in downtown New York walking around . Not being funny I'm seriously curious

I would love to see the before and after results too. I had the FAE on my G23 but took it off because of the controversy regarding warranty issues resulting from higher back pressure. Would love put one back on but am not will to take the muffler out.

Thats a really good point as well. OP says co readings are high, but how are they compared to what many of us see daily in major metropolitan areas.

I could see FAE helping while underway surfing and whatnot, but I'd be willing to bet you won't see much difference while sitting with the engine running filling ballast for instance. The gases will still bubble up from underneath just like normal and the gases will rise. Cool project though and I will be waiting to see the results from testing.

Good question but pretty sure the answer is no. The CO2 still rises out of the water but it just happens further behind the boat I think.

I would think for 'pollution' in a quantitative number to occur, there would have to be many, constant pollutant sources occurring at the same time in a given area... C0 is definitely bad to be exposed to for any amount of time...

There is a big difference in rather the walk thru window is opened or closed. With it closed, there is a vortex created behind the boat that holds the CO in close to the transom. When the window is open, it allows air to pass through and flush out the transom area. This is why all the new boats have a lock open feature on the walk thru window and a warning decal (not that many people read them). Personally, the lock open feature is a bit of a pain, but a good reminder to keep the window open.
