Still missing under load after running on lake for 1 hour

Hi All! A few months ago I started a post regarding my 1986 2001 with Commander and Ford 351. I had been dealing with a missing under load mystery, (only does this on water, not on trailer). Parts replaced by boat service shops: Points to Elec. Ignition, Brand new Carb, Brand New Powerfire Distributor, plug wires.
After all this the boat runs great when first putting on water, then after about an hour of skiing, etc. it starts missing under load, i.e. (pulling skier out of water).
I'm suspect that the coil is getting too hot because I put ice in my ski glove and laid it on coil and after a few minutes I got the skier up with no problems.
I'm not very technical and I want to get a new coil but not sure which one I need. I have a brand new Powerfire Distibutor (PFS-30002) and the current coil I have is the original Motorcraft (which says on the bottom it requires an external Resistor) I don't see any sign of an external resistor so I'm even more confused.
I have 3 wires going to the battery side of the coil and 2 wires on the neg side of the coil.

    Any help would be awesome!

Remove it and take it to the auto parts store and have them match the coil based on unit numbers.

      Thanks!
I took the coil in and they matched it. Went out to the lake wed. Ran fine for about 45 minutes then acted up as usual. Swapped out original the coil with the new one and still missed under load, it even died out a few times. Runs great once the boat up on plane, just misses like crazy trying to get a skier up.
1 year since this began and still trying to figure it out.
I think I'll go crazy soon!

Hmmm. Misses when trying to pull up a skier but will run up ok from a start when not pulling up a skier? But will pull a skier up cold ok? So it's looks like it's both heat and load related? Is that an accurate statement?

New distributor, correct? Where any parts transfers from the old distributor? Does it have a vacuum advance? How do the points look? Do they show signs of pitting or arcing? (This is important and you should check closely). You mention an electronic ignition. What exactly does it have - an MSD type unit or ????

Purpose of a ballast resistor is to lower the voltage to the coil after the engine starts. When cranking on the battery, the voltage can be ~ 11 volts. When the engine starts, it will be closer to 14 volts. This extra voltage will overdrive the ignition but the only real issue is typically the points don't last as long. Lack of a ballast is likely not the immediate problem.

Can you do a vid of the miss and post to youtube?

        Sort of an odd one.....

          K. For grins read a bit on the Powerfire distributor. Very adjustable item. How did the problem change when you swapped in that unit? I'm assuming that was not the distributor you had before. Who set it up?

Let me know if you ever figure out what is wrong. I have a 87 Ski Nautique 2001 and I have the exact same problem. So far, I have rebuilt the carb and replaced the coil but neither has worked.

That distributor is for automotive use not marine . Was it a boat service shop that installer it? Did you have the problem before you changed all of those parts? Is the carb correct for this application? Is it a marine carb?

Put the resistor back on. http://www.nautiqueparts.com/resistorignition.aspx
