Picked up a 2000 Nautique Friday.

Like the title says... Picked up a 2000 Pro Air Nautique on Friday.

It was cheap and it is a mess. Needs a long block and some serious TLC. Really excited to dig in and start a full on resto.

i will ill post up pictures Monday when I get back from a buddies wedding in Austin.

One quick question: I put a wanted add in the classified section for a long block.. But, anybody have a suggestion on where to buy one? Reman? New? Etc?

Thought about it... Summit sells marine long blocks as well.

          And just for fun:

My wellcraft I/O that will keep me on the water while I'm restoring this turd.

And, the jet fleas... Don't worry, I grew up in a family of Ski/Tow Waterports folks so the fleas are used in a respectful manner.

            Also,

I'd like to keep this going as a build/resto thread to post pictures and what not along the way... Would this be the correct section of the forums for such a thing?

My brother just put a GM5.7 long block in his boat on lake Grapevine; he told me he ordered it online and they shipped it...it runs good and he was happy with it. I'll ask him where. I have an '01 like your new project gt40?

That would be awesome.. I know of most of the shops close by but don't know much about their: work/ reputation. I had an outboard rebuilt a few years ago by a shade tree guy in Haltom City that ran perfect but, he doesn't touch inboards.

I let a guy in Crowley work on my Sanger, he ran in his shop with no water until the (new) impeller melted; not sure how he even owns a shop. My brother says he ordered that long block from Jegs online; he installed it himself and it runs much stronger than the one he replaced (he switched to vortec).

It makes you wonder how some people consider themselves a business. I worked at one of the local Powersport Dealerships several years ago and was amazed at some of the hack "repair" jobs we got in from what were supposed to be reputable shops.

I still really need to dig into mine and see what is good/bad and go from there. PLanning for a long block at this point and I will order one from whoever seems to have the best customer feedback. Seems like I can get a "GT40" reman from several places with good track records. As far as install it will just depend on when I decide to pull the trigger if time will allow me to do it "myself" or drop it off somewhere. I have the tools and access to roof hoist plus the added bonus that the hoist is in a buddy's race shop. Where his dad also works and used to run a boat service place himself.

checked Jegs and it looks like they only do marine blocks for GM engines.
Water was 80 degrees Saturday down from 85 a couple of weeks ago so I suspect you will have a 6 month window to rebuild starting soon. If you use the current block make sure to use brass freeze plugs as the standard type will rust out plus a marine non-corrosive gasket set instead of the regular type for the same reason. Much faster/easier to pull than a car motor

Noticed Jegs only has GM myself. Summit sells Ford versions but nothing on the GT40 heads... Jasper and Michigan Motors have decent reviews and both have the option to get the reman long block with the same heads I have currently for a decent price.

                        My current block is trashed.

I'd like to have it ready for spring but I'm not going to kill myself doing it since my I/O is serving us just fine at this point. I'll take my time and do it right so we can enjoy this thing for a long time. Once it's water-worthy I'll part with the I/O.

Any evidence to verify the current power plant is shot?

I would be giving Vince at SkiDim a call and talk with him about options. He's very knowledgable with the GT40's and has helped us trouble shoot two different GT40 equipped boats.

Lots of info in this thread as well. Sorry for the CCFan link but there's tons of good info here to share. http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum...TID=25584&PN=2

                            Visibly Cracked Block

I'll probably give him a shout sometime soon however.

Edit: Thank you for that link!

That would tell me you need a new block!

Another option is to find someone local to assemble a long block to your liking. I would guess you can find a machine shop in the Grapevine area to assemble if you're thinking of dropping in the new powerplant yourself. GT40P heads can be found online as well as all the GT40 specific pieces.

Another contact would be Jody Seal of Florida Inboards. He may have a few GT40s around from people upgrading to Zero Off. He's another guy who can answer any question on these boat as he was in Correct Craft's R&D department for many years. Florida Inboards Inc.
