So I picked the boat up from the shop today...

And it runs just as bad as it ever did! Not only did it still cut out and miss, but it sounded like the 4th of July. I guess it's a good thing I have an air cleaner than won't allow flames to come back through it, or I would have been the firework display and not just have sounded like it!

I'm not exactly sure what they did, (if you want to know exactly who did this work pm me. I'll try to retain some dignity and keep them anon. for now.) but it wasn't what I paid them to do.

I should have expected something like this to happen, seeing as how it happened last time I let them work on it. But I figured everyone can make a mistake once, so I let them try again.

First of all, when I opened the hatch to put the plug in it the air cleaner was not attached. They supposidly rebuilt the carb while it was in. Who knows if they actually did. After unloading the boat into the water, I poped the hatch again to see if I could figure out what was going on. Well, the air cleaner wasn't the only thing not attached. They left one of the PCV valves off, the distributor cap wasn't even clipped on!!!!!!! And the electric choke wasn't wired back!!!!

That is 4 things a monkey wouldn't over look! Much less any sort of boat mechanic! I was promised by the owner of the shop when I dropped the boat off last Tue. that they'd have it running "perfect". Not only was it not running perfect, but it was running worse. At least when I took it there it would rev above 3500. And it would do it w/o backfireing!

Needless to say, I called them and expressed my discontentment and took the boat back. At least I tested it in water before I drove 3 hours back to my house in Ok. only to find it didn't work. We'll see how this turns out.

    World class.

Sounds like it's running lean or too much advance. Either way should be easily fixed by a qualified mechanic. Good Luck (again).

I adjusted the mixture, both ways. It only ran worse. The timing is supposto be 5° before, which it was when I dropped it off, not sure about when I picked it up though. hehe.

        Points?

Also check the springs in the distributor. Mine broke, which messed up the centrifugal advance.

When the "rebuilt" the holey did they replace the power valves? Holey's are natorious for blowing out the power valves....then they dump gas like crazy and boat runs real rough. I got luck and found a shop where the guys had a thing for holey's. Even marine ones. When the rebuilt the Holey the changed out something associated with the power valves...it puts a little ball check valve in so that when the holey backfires (and it will) it won't blow out the power valve (which was the start of all my problems).

Unfortunately when I sold my boat I gave the new owner the listing of all the parts that they replaced (including the part number for the modified parts) BUT I do know the shop.

You may want to call them. I have had freinds send carbs to the, cause not many people work on Holeys anymore.....work on them well!

Good luck............I feel for you, cause mine went out on vacation when it went.

I changed it to elect. ign. last year. I have a feeling that the problem was just caused by crappy workmanship. But the powervalves did cross my mind. It was done at a Nautique dealer, so if they have facotry trained techs. like they are supposto, they should know the Holly 4-barrel as it did come on a LOT of models. hehe.

          Thanks for your imput!

But I do know for a fact it was something that THEY did, or didn't do, to cause the backfireing though. B/c it didn't do it when I took it to them. hehe.

If the dist. cap was not clipped down and it was cranked up it may have cracked the dist. cap or damaged the rotor button.
