The standard steering kit comes as a taper shaft. A non tilt, splined helm would be
required, and I am not sure they come that way.

You can add tilt to the system but it requires the tilt mechanism, and the part that the cable mounts to. Then there is a little universal joint doo dad that makes it all happen... If I can dig up a non tilt helm with splines part number, I'll pass it on.

Thanks for all the help by the way. I was able to get a steering wheel for the non-spline helm, i'm gunna throw it on tonight and see how it works...if its not as good i might consider getting rid of the taper system but for now i'm just happy that i'll be able to use one hand to turn the **** thing.

        Centering the wheel

        Jon,
The splined shaft /wheel combo makes centering the wheel a snap, after doing a cable replacement.
You can come pretty close with the tapered set up by doing the following:
Get the boat going down the lake at skiing speed.
Note where the wheel sits. Now, back at the dock, or on the trailer,
take the four bolts that hold the rack to the pinion gear (helm) and loosen them enough to turn the wheel and not turn the rudder. Turn it from where the wheel sat to where it should be for straight ahead, and tighten.
