For the tar on the interior, you might try Simple Green. It's non-toxic and biodegradable. I use a light bristle scrub brush and it cleans vinyl like a champ. Just remember to follow with a coat of your favorite conditioner/protectant. I waited until after one trip to the lake when everything could get wet and wash away any Simple Green residue before applying the protectant. Good luck!

Junky, are you saying use the WD-40 on the vinyl?

RE: wd 40 RUB RAIL MARKS

On the rub rail, I've had good luck using the rough side of a kitchen sponge on the rubber only. Don't use ont he gel, as it can leave small scratches.

RE: wd 40 RUB RAIL MARKS

SGY, WD-40 is a lubricant ie... it wont dry out your vinyl like some heavy degressers like simple green or purple power. However it does have a solvent in it that will remove tar on just about anything, But you need to use it sparingly! I am not saying to clean your hole interior with it just the tar spots..... or any grease that may not come up with anything else

oooohhhhhh yea! Tried something new today with the WHITE MARKS on the rubrail. Use 3M Adhesive, Tar and Wax remover. Took the white marks off easily. Didn't dull the rubber or eat it away. Coated the rubrail with some vinyl/rubber protectant afterwards and she looks brand-spankin' new. Oh yea, I would shy away from WD-40 on the vinyl. The 3M A,T, W remover says on the bottle that it can be used on vinyl...so give that a shot for those difficult tar spots SGY. Can be found in the automotive section at WalMart for about $5 a can.

Sidenote: Simple green does dry out vinyl if used often. In 2 years, I've used it on our vinyl one time. I also dillute it down. I only recommended it in my previous post because it's hard to beat SG's cleaning power, especially for neglected, dirty vinyl...or tough tar spots. I highly recommend following with your fav. conditioner/protectant to soften and nourish the vinyl.

            Cheers!
