    GT-40 ?

Hello There Nautique Fans, I'm new to this site and enjoy reading what all the members have to say and the help and advice given on this Forum. I get to ski behind a 89 ski nautique and plan on buying my own boat in the spring. I will most likely be looking for a boat around 1995 and up do to the price range. I also will be looking for one with EFI, I think?

In the last few days on this Forum I have noticed a few problems dealing with the GT-40. Are these motor generally good Engines or are they a bit problematic? Any advice would be Great!! Thanks in advance for any input. Great Website.

    RE: GT-40 ?

IMO it's the best boat motor ever made. If I could have ordered one in my new 211 I sure would have. They have gobs of torque and generally run trouble free. Not many changes from 1995-2003.

      RE: GT-40 ?

I think the reason you see more posts about it is that it is one of the most popular engines that was used by PCM. I don't know if I would call it the best ever simply because of the age of it. The old 240 horse 351 is pretty solid. But it is a horse when it comes to power.

        RE: GT-40 ?

I've had a few boats with the GT40 and had none to almost none issues with them (starter relay gone bad). I really like the GT40, it has enough power for all sport activities (ski. slalom, wakeboard and barefooting) and it's one of best engines when it comes to torque. Besides that, it's real good on fuel economics. If the boat you are gonna be looking for has a GT40 it would be a real plus in my opinion!

Try to get a 1996 or later - the Fuel Control Cell (FCC) was first available in 1996 I believe, and I've been told it is a significant improvement over the old fuel pump system.

You can easily tell whether the FCC is present by looking at the engine - the FCC is a tall metal canister on the front left of the engine. You can see it near the bottom center of this picture, with a label on it - http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GT40MPI

The GT-40 is bullet proof. 850 hours on my 2001 196 and the only thing I have done is add gas and change the oil every 50 hours.

Clarification - the FCC was never available on carbureted boats to my knowledge, just fuel injected ones.

I know the question was about GT40's but I wouldnt discount a pro boss motor either. Ive had my carbed engine 10 years in two different SN's. Never touched an adjustment on the carb, ever. Regular maint. oil, impellers.. and one thermostat. Swamped it 2 times, and it runs today (600 hrs.) as fast and quick as day one. I like the way the carbed motor runs/performs w/o the hesitation over my friends 99 GT40 SN, and 03 Air excaliber. It is as rjlong said, "bullet proof".

The only engine that I have seen significant troubles with was the 1994 throttle body injected engine. Like Darrel I too preferred the direct response of the carbed motors. The pro-boss 285 was also a great motor. I guess part of my preference is due to having over 20 years of driving experience then noticing a slight loss of absolute control to the FI computer in the past 5 years.

I have a 97 SNOB with the GT 40. I've never had any trouble, it starts with the first turn of the key every time, and of all the Nautiques I've been in, it has the best shot out of the hole.

Awesome!! Thanks for all the Replies, I guess I have nothing to worry about with that engine or apparently any other engine CC puts in there boats. I guess when you buy a Quality boat you are going to get a Quality engine. Thanks alot for all your Help.

Hey Revman, we have a 99 SNOB w/ the GT-40 and love it. Great torque and power, and absolutely no problems whatsoever. I actually am sad when I ski behind our private lake's club boat (92 Mastercraft) b/c I miss the wake of our SN, the holeshot of our SN, and absolutely miss the tracking of our SN in the course. This is the first Correct Craft that I have owned after owning another comp inboard boat, and I would never go back to any other boat maker out there if and when I replace ours. Have a great time shopping the Nautiques out there!!!!

                            My GT40 is rock solid

This season I bought a 2002 SAN with the GT40. I looked around for about a year for the right boat and was leaning toward the excalibur.
I got the boat with about 100 hours on it. I put 100 hours on it this season and I am really glad the boat I decided on had the GT40.

It is huge out of the hole. Torque and power. It is smooth at cruise and gets better gas mileage than an old chris craft I had with a 140 mercruiser at 30 knots. (of course it 4500 rpm v. 2800 rpm)

My GT40 is fuel injected, multiport. I've heard others comment that this motor is stronger than the excalibur, especially acceleration. My boat runs around 48 mph top end with towers and bimini up. It is rock solid and just seems smooth at any speed.

MY 2000 just passed 1300 hours. No problems. PCM tell me I have another 700-1000 hours to go before overhaul. I just ran 8.5 hours on 20 gallons of gas. The FCC is a hgh pressure pump to feed the Fuel Injection It is not need on carbed boats. Sorry for the ramble.
