    WAVY LOOKING RUB RAIL FIX?

We just got our 2000 Super AIR, and was wondering if anybody has fixed a wavy looking rub rail? I have heard of removing all of the screws and heating and streching it and then reattaching it. Also looking down the side of the boat just above the rub rail the side of the gunnel appears to have some deflection as well. I am very anal so this bothers me! Any help would be great because this will be one of my fall projects.

    Nautiquejunky,

This will work for some wavyness but, not the big waves.

    Remove insert.
back out the screws of the offending area.
Take a rubber mallet and whack the crap out of the rub rail. (believe it or not the rub rail can take some pretty serios hits)

If you remove the rub rail to straighten you'll have to redrill the holes and counter sink them to avoid spider cracks. Unless that was the year they started scoring a line above the screw holes. Then you'll only have to redrill the holes.

This method is tricky because you need two people to pull the rub rail tight against the deck and the other will drill and screw. Refer to previous method to get out small waves.

Just curious, where can you get replacement inserts for the rub rail, do they come in an array of colors, and what is the price? Thanks!

RE: WAVY LOOKING RUB RAIL FIX?

wake junky thanks for the info, Are you saying to just back the screw out or remove it? I am afraid if I wack it too hard with the screw loosened...... OH! MAN! Whas that crack there before? Get my drift? Because the screw will be pushing on the gel when you whack the rub rail up or down. How ever I just removed the center section of the rub rail and it appears the tech at CC that installed it had a bad night before! There are multiple broken screw heads ,also stripped screw heads. I will try and post some pics tommorrow. I dont know if they used the scoring method or counter sink but I will find out . I will have to get some ease outs from my tool box at work tommorrow and work on it when I get home. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Mhayes I dont know anywhere other than the dealer that would carry the insert, However I plan on changing mine this fall. It has got some pressure marks on it as well.. Its nothing more than a hollow piece of pvc rubber though. Should not be to hard to locate the same size of pvc.
