      You can definitely get a rideable wave using the factory ballast, but I do believe that using some additional weight makes for a longer sweet spot, steeper lip and generally large face. I have a post detailing the weight I use somewhere on this site (sorry at work so dont have time to post a link or pics). Even if the weight is the people in the boat and the cooler moved to the wave side, it makes a significant difference. That being said, balancing the weight to 40% in the front and 60% in the back helps lengthen the face and the sweetspot so you can ride 15+ feet off the swim step.
