Awful dealer experience while shopping! Shame on you!

As many of you may have heard, I'm actively shopping for a new Nautique to replace my trusty 90. I search for nautiques on boattrader, PN, flipsell, Ski-it-again, iboats, etc, every day, as I have for years just as a time waster. I have also gotten several responses to my posts about WTB 97-99 SN. The point is, I have a good idea of what the boats are worth, from both a private and dealer perspective. I also consider CC to be a hobby of mine- I’ve always wanted one, and got the 90 simply because it was the most CC I could afford at the time (age 23). Now, 3 years later, we can afford quite a bit more boat. I know enough about the boats to tell you what year an SN is based on every subtle change year to year. I could tell a 97 from a 98,99, or a 90 from a 91, 92, 93 in about five seconds. I can do the same with Malibus and MC’s, but with less accuracy. I could rattle facts and figures off about these boats for hours and give even the most seasoned boat salesman a run for the money in ski boat knowledge. The point is, I love this stuff. I’m not some moron off the street looking to buy a boat to sit at Grandpas house and pull the kids on tubes.

I found a nice candidate boat with low hours at a Midwest dealership which will remain un-named. I’d gone back and fourth with the salesman on the phone about the boat, and he gave me the “lowest price” on the boat. Based on my knowledge, the price was still about a grand high, at least. I thought maybe in person (looking at the calendar also), with cash, we could meet in the middle at least. So we drove 5 hours to this dealership. The salesman wasn’t even there. Instead, I got who appeared to be the owner, noting by the shiny new BMW convertible sitting outside with the pompous vanity plate. He acted like a total pompous, stuck up, elitist (insert strong expletive here) right off the bat. He made it obvious we were really inconveniencing him to look at the boat as he grudgingly got up and showed us to the garage. He offered no chit chat or “welcome, thanks for coming” or any information on the boat. Simply led us to the warehouse, walked away. When I said I wanted to drive it because we were serious, he almost wouldn’t let us because he said it was “winterized”. We hadn’t even talked price and he was already very short with me and snooty as possible. Obviously it wasn’t winterized, but that’s beside the point. He dropped it in the water and sent a highschool tech-in-training out with us and again went to his office. The boat ran great and had no major problems. I’d give it a 9/10. However it had no options and had slight, minor imperfections which made me feel as if it wasn’t worth 100% of what he was asking and made me more comfortable offering less. I still had to put PP in the thing and pay tax. I sit down in the guys office, and again, the attitude. He looked up from whatever he was doing like I was absolute garbage and was a waste of his time. I say “hey, I’d like to make an offer on the boat”. He goes, “we don’t play games. We sell 400 boats a year. The price is the price and that’s it”. I’m like, “even paying cash, right here, on the spot, you will not even entertain an offer”. “No”. Not even a “sorry, thanks for coming, here’s my card”. Nothing. Short and bitter. So, I said fine. Walked away. In the car, absolutely shocked by this guy’s attitude and what an awful experience the whole thing was (keep in mind, we did not mention one number). Considering the drive, and that the boat had what we wanted, I decided to walk back in there and at least throw out a number. The number was 900.00 less than his “lowest”. He goes “no, the boat will sell in the spring for way more than I’m even asking now. There are 4 people in line to buy it, and we have more in the boat than that”. Then turns his back and walks away. Now, am I disappointed we didn’t get the boat? Maybe a tad. But this is a buyers market and there will always be more boats. For a grand more than he was asking, I could pick up an 00-03 with decent hours and PP. What disappointed me more is that I have never been treated so rudely in any retail situation I have ever been in. I’ve never felt more unwelcome and unneeded by any retail establishment. This guy, was, by far, the biggest A-hole I’ve ever met in any store. It’s not like I’m buying the 20 year old trade in on a rusty trailer- I’m about to put down enough cash to fill a decent size duffel bag with 20’s. My Malibu dealership has sales guys that will talk to me for an hour about boats knowing full well I cannot afford a new one. They are pleasant and welcoming. This has soured my whole CC experience considerably. In a few years ( don’t plan on making less money over the years) we will be looking at brand new boats, and guess what sales experience will stick out in my mind? I know I’m not in this guy’s “territory” but the whole brand looks bad when you are treated as garbage by a dealer like this. Thoughts?

too bad about your dealer experience

You know it's sad that you had this experience and hope you give another dealer a try. I bought my first CC this year from one of CC's oldest dealers in Lake George, NY.

Tom Roach at Adirondack Marine runs a family oriented business and is the most personable salesperson/owner I've ever dealt with.

I stopped one day in the Spring just talking about my interests in CC and wanting to trade up from by 1986 Chris Craft for a wakeboard boat my son would appreciate.

He took me in his truck to a couple of his storage facilities and we looked at some new, some slightly used equipment. I found a 2002 SAN that just dropped my jaw to the ground, and the rest is history.

Tom called my house, made arrangements for financing after willing and appropriate negotiations. A true gentleman. When ever I am in the area we stop just to chat and he's always great to talk to.

So, find another dealer. Like anything, or anywhere, people are different. This guy you mentioned lost a sale, but he's only in it for the money anyway. Find a dealer that's in love with the sport and the brand and can appreciate your interests.

RE: too bad about your dealer experience

Anyone please feel free to disagree but I've read here in various discussions recently how buyers have indicated that they should get a better deal by paying cash. This is based on an old automotive myth. When financing a boat or car the buyer simply gets a loan from a bank or other lending institution. The lending institution then gives the seller a check for the car/boat. Where is the benefit for the selling in getting "cash" from the buyer instead of a paid in full check from the bank?

This is a minor comment on M3Fan's experience. He is/was a willing buyer showing committment with the calendar on his side. The dealer acted poorly. That said I wouldn't let a poor dealer affect future buying decisions except for avoiding his dealership.

I've had similiar poor experience while shopping for a Malibou. Caught the dealer is some out in out lies, rather than selling his boat went out of his way to disparage CC. He eventually made the comment one day while my wife was going through the RLXI that if I liked the CC so much why didn't I buy it. A month later I took his advice.

Yeah M3, you have every right to be disappointed with what happened. I do have to say though, I had a great experience with our local NW dealer, Pacific Nautiques in Pacific WA (about 1 hr away from Seattle). Not sure where you are located M3, but maybe give Rob or Ron a call at Pacific and see what they have in their inventory. They are great guys, and really worked for us to buy our 99 SNOB and work out a great trade for our 90 Ski Brendella shortline. We had a bit of cash, but really using a paid off Brendella as the down payment. These guys went out for probably a 2 hr test ride with us, offered a test ski, and yet, THIS WAS A BOAT that would sell quickly (1999 flawless condition with 103 hrs, we bought it Oct 05).

Point being, that there are better dealers, obviously. And, there is no right for any dealer, in a sales position, to treat you any less than a paying customer, who deserves full attention. Also, if any consequence, even if you did buy that boat from them, chances are they wouldn't stand behind it or you if there was any question later, and might as well set up a good relationship for the future. Good luck with your hunt for the perfect boat...it is out there, just at a different dealer!

Some people just suck. What would suck more, is for one of them to have the ability to influence your hobby or intrest. Don't think that everyone associated with CC or owns a CC is out to be your buddy. While there is the concept of the CC family, remember that sometimes families show up on the Jerry Springer show.

Your posting really pissed me off. I don't know how you controlled yourself. Mrese is right, some people really suck. Its a poor reflection on CC and I would send your post to Jeff Warner for his comments. Whether you buy a CC might hinge on Jeff's response.

You know as well as anyone now, that the dealer is way more important than the sticker on the side of the boat. Good luck.

The dealer doesn't deserve you as a customer. Go somewhere else and throw rotten eggs at his new BMW. But, don't let one A-hole ruin your thoughts towards CC. If you want to buy a Malibu, buy a Malibu. But if you really want that Nautique you've always wanted, don't let this piece of crap stop it from happening...

And I agree with SGY, I don't know how you controlled yourself that way and it did kinda piss me off too for some reason...

When M3Fan told him he was paying cash, that's an indicator that the dealer has an interested customer and that he (the dealer) would not be wasting his time on someone who knew good and well they could not get financing and did not have the cash. Sort of a sure thing for the dealer if he's on the up and up and treats the customer like a fellow human being should. They say money talks and BS walks, M3Fan, please take your hard earned money elsewhere and find that CC you want and don't let a bad apple keep you from the tree. You'll never see it when happens, but in regards to that a-hole, what goes around, comes around. Best of luck!!!!!! Mike

Fair Point. But if the dealer did his job (he didn't) he would have qualified the customer
to learn his seriousness of the purchase. He drove 5 hours to consumate the deal. That should tell the dealer all he needed to know about M3Fan's intent of buying the boat.

M3, If PN is supposed to be such a great resource to all of us, why would you not identify the dealer who was too put out to "deal" with you. Also, I am curious to know if you made an appointment with the salesman before you drove five hours to check out a specific boat. If so, I am even more puzzled about my first question.

M3, buy what you want - BUT from someone else! WE are the customer, but maybe someone else's. Also, I respect your restraint in not mentioning the name. It is not easy to do, especially in such a case. ER

Oh no Richard, I agree 100%. I was just answering your question on the "cash" issue. This dealer should've treated M3Fan like he was his only customer in the world, PERIOD!!! He lost M3's business, and I suspect lots more if M3 has anything to say about it. Why people act like that is beyond me. Hang in there M3!! Mike

Agree that no potential buyer should be treeted that way. If you made an appointment to see the boat they should have told you if you could or could not take a test drive before driving 5 hours. Sorry your efforts were in vein, obviously you planned on coming home with the boat at some price. You're right that it's buyers market; you will find another boat at a fair price. I'm glad you walked away and without egging the car.

Why don't you tell us what you're looking for so we can let you know if our local dealers have something you might be interested?
