Need advise on hitch drop down height

    Hello,
I just bought a 01 Chezy Z71 1500. It has a 6 inch lift w/ 35 inch tires. I need to buy a new hitch, but not sure of the drop I should purchse. I was thinking 6 inches because of the lift?

Most for most trailers, you are looking for 18 inches ground to top of ball. You
should be able to measure it out and figure your drop from there. BKH

Ramlin recommends making the ball height such that the main trailer beams are parallel to the ground. Keep in mind that a higher ball height lessons the tongue weight and vice versa.

You should be able to tell a difference with how it pulls when it is level, or parrallel to the ground. It should be more stable and better over bumps and stuff.

                Jeffro,

Too many varaibles to predict without some trial and error. I have an 01' 1/2 ton Z71 with 4 inch lift and 33's and the six inch was too low for my trail rite trailer. However it was perfect height for my old boat/extreme trailer. I moved to a 4" drop and the trailer sets paralel to the ground now.

On a related note, your going down the right road to get this right. Too low = too much tongue wait and too high = uneven tire wear (IMO).

                  Jeffro,

....and by the way. Nice truck selection! I've been very happy with mine. If you don't have a cat back and K&N kit on your new truck yet it's defintely worth it!

                    Thanks for all your help.

Oops, I meant Chevy. Sorry for the typo. I love my truck so far.

Jeffro - I think the answer is "it depends". If you have a tandom trailor, you want to make sure not to have it too low in the front as this will unnecessarily wear your tires.

I have a Suburban and has big tires, etc. and I had to get my trailer on level ground and crank it up to where was level and then measured from the ground up. That's the only way to know.
