    General thoughts on Surf Pipe

I've never had a boat with it, but it looks like it's standard issue on the new 15's with NSS. I think it looks horrible, even though it's not visible when the boat is in operation. My biggest complaint is it seems to make the boat sound like a stern drive. Given the small amount of emissions the new motors put out, is it really necessary, or just a legal protection for the manufacturer ? Just a little winter time food for thought.

It's more of a convenience/ extra safety factor than anything. At surf speeds you exhaust is completely out of the water and the noise can be really annoying. I have had a Fresh Air Exhaust on 3 of my previous boats, is on my current 210, and have recommended them to numerous customers and friend's along the years who are big into surfing. The two main benefits are noise reduction and re directing CO fumes. I don't want to get into a huge long debate about CO funds from surfing but I have spent days on the sun deck of a boat without a "surf pipe " and days in boats with a pipe. My fatigue factor and general over all feel was significantly better on the boats w pipes. I didn't really get headaches or feel fatigued. To me if your going to primarily surf it's s must have. If wakeboarding is your primary sport with an ocassional surf set ......maybe not huge benefit. You do lose that throaty inboard sound tho. However I am 90% wakeboarding and 10% surf and I still appreciate the noise reduction alone as do many other primary wakeboard owners.

Here is some good reading and some info. Just for record I don't think anyone without a surf pipe who surfs regularly will die as a direct result of surfing without one. I just think if you are a primarily "surf oriented" boat it's a no brainier and everyone in the entire boat will benefit.

I think someone once posted the FAE was their best stereo upgrade. The interior of the boat is definitely quieter with an FAE / surf pipe...which, I think, is its main benefit.

GC, for anyone that surfs, it's the 2nd best mod after NSS period. And it's no just a little emissions. Is a smog bath, regardless with cats or not. You are talking a 6.0 or a 6.2 at 3-4000rpms. Emissions aside, I'd want it for the sound reduction alone. It's that good.

Dang it. Y'all are making me feel guilty for considering removing it. Guess I'll try if first and see how we like it. Just hate giving up that good V8 sound.

GC, I miss the rumble too. But I agree with the others if you going to surf, you can fell, see and smell a difference.

Thanks for all the comments. Guess it's not the mean, nasty, ugly, exhaust canceling addition thought it was.

I don't know if the factory pipe can be retrofitted, but Fresh Air Exhaust can make you one. They're pretty reasonable.

I like the look of the factory surf pipe better than the aftermarket versions, so the factory pipe from a 2014 230 will work on a 2013 230 with no problems even when Nautiqueparts says it is only for 2014?

I have the fresh air exhaust I love it and Larry is first class with some of the best customer service I have ever dealt with. I used my boat for a month or so without the pipe when I installed it made a major difference in sound as well as fumes we now hang out on the platform all day.
