    Temp/Humidity monitoring

So I have the benefit of having a large enough garage to store my boat inside and it stays warm enough in the winter to not bother with winterizing as well. I do get a bit gun-shy when temps drop below freezing outside, especially for a few days like this week or single digits. I bought a temp/humidity sensor off Amazon a few weeks ago that has connectivity to internet and a monitoring service that will graph the data for you. It also has the capability of setting up alarms that can be sent to you via email or text message. The sensor is wireless, but a "gateway" is plugged into my internet router via CAT5 cable that sends the sensor info to the Lacrosse Alerts data server.

    http://www.amazon.com/Crosse-Alerts-...+temp+humidity

So far it has been very reliable, but there was one day it wasn't pulling info from my sensor. Looks like their server was down for a few hours because my sensor was fine. I did receive an alert telling me there was no data for more than 75 minutes. I have the dry temp probe model, and plan to use it for OAT once I get a new house, but for now I just have it reading garage temp as well. Here is a screen shot from this morning...

You can see the temp is already in alarm because it is lower than my alarm setpoint of 40°F, but the probe temp I have set at 35°F. The graph keeps info displayed for about 1 week prior. Not bad peace of mind for $80 and it's much better than a few water bottles I had sitting in the garage.

cool idea, and definitely preferable to water bottles, lol. i don't think it gets down to freezing in my garage either, but i don't trust it enough to not drain it.

Coldest I've even seen in my garage was 33°F and that was a few years ago when we had a few days of single digit temps. That was also at the garage door that is un-insulated. In the engine compartment and under the dash was still around 35-38°F.

I dropped two ducts into the garage when I built my house, and it never varies more than 15 degrees +/- of house temp. Small investment for "lost" energy. -4 degrees this morning, and 55 in garage when I got up. Easy adder for most current homes as well.

I may be close to building a new house and have played with the idea of installing a small thru-wall unit just for the garage to keep it cool/warm for the boat and make it more enjoyable to work in the garage. I don't think I would want to use the same unit that conditions the home for the garage.

Haha....this was as I pulled into work this morning. Before I pulled out of the garage, it was +8*. I would love to heat that sucker, but I am afraid it would send me to the poor house! My poor little diesel will not even heat up in this cold!

Sorry, didn't mean to get off track. That is a pretty cool little sensor for $80

I worked with the builder and super insulated as well as quality insulated doors. The HVAC guy did some calculations and basically added an extra 1/2 ton in sizing the unit. There is no return, just two ducts dropped into the ceiling. Helps moisture evaporate faster, cooler for working in the summer, and definitely a plus getting into 55 degree vehicles when it was -12 this morning. I would recommend this just behind a floor drain.

Don't you just love technology. We are way past the days of hanging thermometers, heat lamps and "water bottles" and losing sleep checking on them.

How much are the alerts after the free trial? It makes me a little nervous that the system sends house data to thier server but it makes sense from an ease of installation why they designed it that way.
