    Nav Data on new boat

I picked up my new G23 a few weeks ago. When I pull up the nav, no lakes come up - as if it doesn't have a database installed. I asked the dealer and they say it's another $500 to $600 to get a data base. It's not standard as Nautique doesn't know where the boats are going, so it would be a waste for them to install a random database.

I would have though a database would come with a new high end boat. Anyone have experience with this?

FWIW, my dealer installed the appropriate data card before I took delivery. Never mentioned an extra charge.

No, comes standard with Nautiques with Linc. Tiny little data card comes with the boat, gets inserted in the back of the LINC screen.

It was not extra for mine either, but I do think it is a dealer install.

In my black books bag there is an empty clastic card holder. Probably holds something about the side of a big SD card. Which makes me think it did come with it.

What is your geographical coverage? 1/4 of the US or the entire country?

Every lake we have been on has been in our GPS, but not sure about actual coverage area. Just assumed it was a GPS based system but guess I'm wrong if a card is required. You really want this, great feature a big lakes you aren't familiar with. It will track your path of travel so you can just double back and always know where you need to return to.

This is exactly why I wanted to have the nav system. We will visit a few lakes this summer, and even though the iPhone works great for tracing your path back, dash mounted is easier to use and see.

Right now, the outline of the US shows up, and all the tracks I have made. But no land / water notations.

I just ordered a G21. List shows: LINC Map Card: US under details. Are you zoomed in too close on that picture to show the shore?

If I zoom out I see the exact same.. no water.. and I am clearly on the lake..

I just checked my options sheet - "LINC Map Card US" Good thinking. They can't dispute that....

That little plastic card holder box you mentioned is what contained the data card. My dealer left that box in my bag along with a small information sheet about it.

cedarcreek216 -- it is gps based. GPS nav systems need a map of the terrain, etc, to know what's around them. That map is stored on a data card or other internal storage device in every nav system. The GPS portion just provides the lat/long coordinates but knows nothing about the terrain. Without the map data, all you have is your coordinates but no information about the terrain. That's how the first consumer GPS units were...I had one back in the early 90s. Expensive and you needed a paper chart to make them useful.

I think post #6 established the fact that "Yes" he has it..the chip....I think what he's looking for now is ....How do I get it to work to show the lake??

I think post #6 established he does not have the chip, but had the empty plastic chip holder. I'd go back to the dealer and simply tell them to make it work. That's the beauty of having a new boat.

Can you zoom out and see other lakes? Nautique uses Navionics cards and unfortunately not every lake is mapped.

I test drove a 2015 G23, on the lake I primarily use and it was on the map. It's a larger lake, takes about 25 minutes to get across at normal speeds.

The G23 that I bought was still in the factory shrink wrap, so the boat I previewed was their "demo"
