    Slip Renting/Ownership

So I finally took the plunge this year and decided to get a slip. What are some of the things you guys can share about slip renting/ownership that I should know? Does anyone transport gas down to their boat instead of paying overpriced gas at the marina? Any other tips for spiders, theft deterrence, etc?

Its been long time for me. We would just haul 5 gallons at a time. But that was back in 2000. The slips we we were on had locked gates at each dock and the water was deep enough that you couldn't steal anything easily. Double check that battery, maybe switch to a float driven bilge pump instead of the every 5 mins on off kind, a good cover goes a long way. After or even during big storms I would drive by the boat to check on it. Lets just say I had a bad cover once and nearly lost a boat from a big rain. Just got to it before the carb went under and battery had run dead trying to keep up. Double check for water leaks or anywhere you could challenge the battery and bilge pump. With the cover on it won't dry out very well so plan on a.way to dry out jackets and such. The slips also had a lift that was handy for twice a year algae removal and oil change with out having to trailer. Plan a couple weekends for that job. Put a few scotchbrite pads in the boat and remove the algea line each time out. Not having to trailer the boat each day was well worth the added issues with maintenance and care.

Hadn't thought about the bilge pump. I've got an onboard charger with electricity hookup at the slip. Will that still be a problem?

What lake? I would think a secure storage unit to hang all wet jackets and gear in would be great. That would save having to haul them home every time. Around here people have TV's tables and all the necessary items for a good lounge area at their slips as well.

Although we have our own personal dock, we can't use it do to low water levels, so we're on a waiting list at one of the marinas for a slip, so I have some of the same concerns as you. Even on our own dock, we transported gas with four 5 gallon cans. The key was to try to not let it get too low before refilling. We're not gonna like having to remove wakeboards/surfboards each time, but we don't want to take a chance of being stolen. I guess I've been fortunate, but I have always turned off the switch to the batteries thinking the bilge was hot wired, but I've since found out they're not.

What lake are you guys on? Still low even with the recent rains? You must be out West. I know Cedar Creek, where we have a place, is above full pool right now. Hoping it stays that way this year. What are you guys paying for monthly slip rentals?

I should have bought a place on Cedar Creek while the lake was down. Probably get a better deal than now lol

There are still a ton of good deals out there. we have two places out there because we found of all things a trailer house on an incredible lot while we were on the lake one day last summer. Put an offer in that day and owned it the next month for $90k. Has a good boat dock and great open water lot. We will build a new house on it this year, but the trailer is perfectly usable until then. Our other place is a two bedroom two bath on good water with a boat dock but we put it on VRBO and it stays full all summer so we just decided to buy another place. I know our neighbors just sold theirs this month, real nice two bed two bath for $235k with a killer dock and nicely updated house. They are out there still. Word has it in 2016 it's going to be a constant level lake too. The Tarrant County Water Board bought the rights to lake Palestine and are going to pump water between the two. That's when you will really want to be out there.

Here's the view from the $90k trailer house. Am in the process of getting a cradle in the lift and getting rid of the straps.

When are they going to start taking water out of Lake Palestine? It is full right now but I know many are worried out here that we will be losing water soon. Lake Tyler has 300k tear downs and I can only see that price going up if Palestine is losing water to DFW.

2016 is what the bond says. They already have one of three reservoirs in Kaufman built which is apparently where they will do the transfer from. I know the bond is approved and work has started, what I don't know is if it is a one way process. This weekend I heard it would be more of an exchange type situation to manage the levels of both if one is higher than the other they will share to keep both at a manageable level. It's been a long time since I've seen Palestine real low. But then again I don't keep a tight eye on it since I don't go out there too much.
