    2015 G series transmission help-Please

I need to know if i have problem or not. I did not notice this when I test drove this boat before I purchased it. When I shift to forward, it is seamless-so quiet that you can't even tell the prop is turning and engaged. When I shift to reverse- way different sound- it engages loud and it almost like you can hear the gears turning. I have 9 hours on the boat.

Are all the reverses louder than the forward? Even the engagement

Please input and advice-dealer is far away and our season is just getting started. I swear i would have noticed this during test run. I am still going threw break-in and was running the boat today.

I also think I have a hole in the belly ballast . I get too much water in the front bilge area. Anyone check this themselves?

I have a 2015 G23 and one of the things I love about it is how smooth and quiet it shifts. Reverse should sound the same as forward, it does on my boat.

My reverse has a more palpable feel to it than the forward does. Forward is silky smooth without a sound. I would not consider it clunky, and other inboards I have owned have been the same way. I considered mine normal. I have the 450 motor.

It might seem funny, but I would record it with my phone with the engine compartment open, and send it to your dealer.

Reverse has a distinct sound -- kind of a whine. My reverse gets used quite a bit since my boat is so heavily-weighted when pulling contests and practice sessions for the more advanced riders. I tend to use reverse to back up a bit after a fall, so that I can get around the rollers faster without going through them at idle speed. I get a slightly more noticeable bump going into reverse, but nothing I would consider rough, and it is always smooth. Applying throttle in reverse, especially if the boat has forward momentum, will cause vibration in the steering wheel and some noise. This is normal, since water is being pulled past the rudder from behind.

jeff- that is is a good example also. mine goes in smooth to the feel , but has much different sound going in and while it is bing used. sounds nothing like the first forward position.

i will still try to get some video to be sure.

Mine is quiet and smooth going into forward. Going Into reverse, it is smooth but makes a distinct and fairly loud clunk. I haven't noticed a whine while in reverse, but I haven't been listening for that and really haven't used reverse much (just around the launch and briefly to stop forward momentum pulling up to a rider.

The clunk is loud enough that you can't miss it. I was going to compare it to a friend's G and have my dealer take a look at the first service. Getting an iPhone video/sound recording is a good idea. My last boat, a 2008 210, was also very smooth/quiet going into forward. Into reverse, it was very slightly louder on engagement. Hardly noticeable.

xrichard- you explained it to a tee. makes me feel much better. my only concern is-it was not like like 5 hours ago on the hour meter on my boat.

Obviously, it's hard to tell relative volume and pitch and I've never listened to it with the hatch open, but I'd say that sounds similar to mine going into reverse. Going into forward, it is close to silent. Not a big deal if the reverse clunk is normal, but I have to say one of the nice things about my last boat was the combination of quiet and smooth when going into gear.

White- that reverse whine while in gear is normal... The clunk.. Not so much. Take it to your dealer... At the end of the season and have him diagnose. It's not something I'd miss a weekend or more over... But it does need to be looked at.

I don't hear the clunk on my 2013 G23, but it is a different setup. I agree with Ryan, it doesn't sound critical, but wouldn't hurt to check it out. Is the dealer going to do the break-in service, call them ahead of time and put them on notice.
