    Potentially Bent Prop / Other........Suggestions (SANTE 230)

Hit something tonight at idle in my 230.

It was firm enough to stall the motor.

Afterward there was a heavy vibration when I tried to get the boat on plane..

I limped it home to avoid tearing up anything else.

I put the boat on the hoist to inspect.

The prop and shaft look ok visually.

No noticeable dings, bends or visual run out. The leading edges of the blades feel fine.

    Few questions:

Is there anything else that it could be beyond the prop?

Recommended method to validate that it is the prop?

If I replace the prop, what are the suggested aftermarket options?

    I appreciate everyone's help!

    Jacob

If you have a spare prop, I would put that on and test it. That's the easiest way to tell if it's a prop

That whole assembly is designed for the prop to take the licks and not damage anything else. You really have to hit something hard and just right to get more than the prop. I've high centered the boat on concrete on the rudder before and the prop was all that was damaged.

I'm no help on an aftermarket option though.

Start with the prop, either get a new one or take it to someone who knows who to fix and make sure it's ballanced. I had a buddy that located a stump with mine...by by rudder, bent prop and shaft assumed.. Got a new rudder and I got the prop fixed, supposedly, still vibrated. Ordered and installed a new shaft, still vibrated. Took the prop to another guy who knew what he was doing and he showed me that the prop was not fixed correctly the first time. Went ahead and got new prop and had him fix the other so I would have a spare. New prop fixed the issue, never had a chance to try out the spare nor did I isolate the shaft as an actual issue. He straightened my old shaft too as it had a slight camber, although he could not guarantee the shaft would be any good.

Long story short, don't fool with the shaft until you know for sure it's not the prop. Its take some time and know how to get shaft installed.

I've been there too. It doesn't take much for the prop to be off and it can be so slight you can't see it. That's why I shake my head when someone talks about fixing one themselves with pliers.

Take something to measure the gap between the prop and hull. Turn the prop. Gap should remain very consistent on all blades. I would also recommend a back up prop. I bought a rebuilt one through Whitelake (www.Nautiqueparts.com). Screwed my prop last weekend and my summer isn't gone because I have the back up.

Takes a lot to mess up the shaft. Go ahead and get yourself a new prop. Perfect time to get a better prop if your stock one isnt doing everything u want it to. There are many places that fix props. Can be sent back to acme. I think nettle props might also take props in for repair. Your looking at about $200 for a avg repair. It's atleast a 2week turnaround.

Everyone should have a spare anyway. Nows your time to get it.

                Thanks everyone!

I have found a shop to fix this one and will order a spare.

I have searched but can't find anything definitive on an upgrade prop.

If you hit it hard enough to stall the motor it may have bent the shaft as well. Mate hit a log and the boat did a similar thing and ended up being both the prop and shaft. Hope this isn't the case for you.
                    Cheers.

I ordered a new 2079 from Nettles on Monday. (Nettles was awesome by the way, great service and price)

Should have it tomorrow and will diagnose from there.......

                      Fingers crossed.

There's lots of options for new props. I've purchased quite a few from Delta Propellers. They are a site sponsor and offer a discount to PN members. As far as which prop to buy (if you don't want to buy an exact replacement), we need to know more about your boat and how you use it. Do you want faster planning, etc.?
