So my family has gotten into surfing over the past year and it seems to be getting more attention by my kids. I have a 2003 210 (non-team) with no extra ballast piggybacking hard tanks. With port side loaded and 4-5 people in boat, the wave doesn't really cut it. It produces a washed out, very short, wave with little push (can't really get off the rope sometimes). Question is, has anyone gotten this boat to surf well? I'm right on the cusp of upgrading and if I can't better the surf wave, I may be pushed into a new boat. Thoughts?

Easy for me to say when it's not my money, but the upgrade makes it so much easier. You can get a decent wave but will need sacs everywhere which is very conducive to having kids on board. Load up the surf side as much as possible back to front with about a 70-30 ratio on weight.

I was having the same problem. I had a 2000 Sport Nautique (same hull as yours I think) and could get a wave but it wasn't great. As cedarcreek216 said you will need as much ballast as you can get in the boat. I upgraded to a new one and it is unbelievable what it can do surf wise when setup correctly. If getting a new one is possible, go for it. I used to only wakeboard, but wanted the wife and kids to get involved and surfing has done that. Going out to ride is no longer "my thing" it is now a "family thing". Totally worth it for me!

I have an 04 sante and it surfs pretty decent with the stick ballast and 4-5 peeps. It definitely throws a cleaner wake on the starboard side tho. I just upgraded to 750s in the rear and a 650 wedge in the front, only tried that for a very short time so far but it definitely needs some dialing in. There are starting to be a lot of bolt on surf plates that make a big difference from what I've seen, however they are pretty expensive still.

Try the other side. I was told that my 211 would surf port, but it simply wouldn't clean up, even with stock port full, belly half full, two more 350 sacks, and a 450 sack. Now, I can surf with just my wife and I on starboard with a 350 in the back driver seat, cooler, and an extra 350 in the locker on a piggy-back. I'm about to upgrade to a 540 in the rear locker, and will move the 350 to the ski locker to make the wave a little longer. I've tried this config with a friends spare bags and it worked perfectly.

As others have said, due to prop rotation the starboard wave sets up super easily but the port side takes lots of weight and is very sensitive to speed. With patience you can get it to work though. Here is what works for me with my 99 Super Sport which is the same hull although the extra weight of the big block may alter things slightly. I have no tanks so it's all bags. 750 full plus another sack on top of that so probably about 900 lbs in the port rear locker. That extra 150 lbs seems to make all the difference for me. 400 lb bag on the rear of the port side seating if I am light on passengers. 600 lb belly sack almost full. I have the integrated bow sack under the front seats but I don't find much difference with it empty, half or full but empty seems to work best for me most of the time. It's not great but certainly enough to drop the rope, do some 360s and have some fun.Shawn

I surfed my 04 port side all the time. IIRC we would do factory port/belly. 1 750 fat sac on the rear seat port side. 120lbs lead weight in the port locker, 270lbs lead weight in the bow port side.
Then when we switched to wakeboarding we would move 120lbs of the lead from the bow to the rear starboard side and leave 130 lbs under the seats in the bow.

Easy.
750 bag in surf side locker. 680 bag in skii locker. 400 bag in the nose (i have sand and lead under the seats).
9.8 mph. Have passengers sit on surf side and if theres less than 3 on that side, sit over there while you drive. If you are surfing port side.
We surf all the time both sides.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Interesting comments (for example, the only side I can get a decent wave is port side...not sure why). I was afraid of responses like this. I REALLY don't want to put a TON of sacs everywhere and shift people around the boat all day long. This, coupled with the ego-swallowing fact that wakeboard wake is a little too steep for me and my kids, might push us to a new boat. Love the 2003 210, but...
